Ten Things I Learnt This Year
‘the only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come’
If you read my posts, you’ll know that I love to get reflective. And what better time than as 2020 draws to a close.
Looking back, you are able to see what this year has brought. The ups and the downs, the memories, the things you’d prefer to forget, the successes, the achievements, to see how far you’ve come but importantly, to observe what you have learnt. Part of growing up and time moving on is maturing, learning more about yourself, your values and your ethics.
Despite this crazy year with not too much going on other than a global pandemic, a host of lockdowns and tier systems, I have learnt some valuable lessons that I want to share.
- Don’t over think ‘what’s next’ — live in the present and make the most of this exact moment. Planning or overthinking your next move can mean you totally forget to enjoy what is happening right now
- Spend more time doing the things that make you happy — as I think we’ve all realised this year life is too short to not do the things that make you happy even if it’s silly things. Whatever it is that gives you happiness, indulge in it! Fully immerse yourself in it and get lost in that amazing moment
- Life is precious — say no more
- True colours will show — everyone’s true colours will show at some point. It is at that point you decide whether you want that person/people in your life or not
- You are unique in every single way — out of every single person in this world, there isn’t another person like you. Any city, any town, any country, any continent there is no one like you. That is something to be proud of. It’s something to make count
- The small things matter the most — our health, a walk outside with friends, a simple hug. This year has been a big change and stripping us back to the core with only technology to communicate and utilising what we have around us as best we can has shown that it really is the simple and small things
- Turning your weaknesses into your greatest strengths is possible — your weaknesses or what you find difficult don’t have to stay as weaknesses. Everything can change if you work at it and give it the chance
- Trust your gut —intuition is an immediate understanding of something. You just know. Sometimes you need to trust your gut and go with it. It’s not just your head and your heart you can listen to
- Sometimes you need to be a bit selfish — looking after ourselves and doing what’s best for us as individuals is important. We neglect ourselves, put others first to the detriment of our own health and happiness. On planes we are told to put our own oxygen mask on before helping others… save yourself, work on yourself, treat yourself to be your best and happiest and you’ll be able to be the best version of you for those around you
- It’s easy to make someone’s day— sometimes people feel invisible. Eye contact, a text, a smile, a quick call. It really isn’t hard to cheer someone up. Someone you don’t even know, or even a friend or family member. Show that somebody you care
Call me crazy, but I’m excited to see my learnings from next year already!
Have you learnt anything in this crazy year? The year that will be remembered as one of the maddest in history!
