LETTER
It’s a Nike-NFL-Civil Rights Mash-Up!

Summer’s unofficially over as marked by the Labor Day holiday. And you know what that means: NFL football! Given the unsettled matter of the national anthem controversy between the NFL and the NFL Players Association, this season promises far more excitement beyond touchdowns, personal fouls, and requisite calls of excessive celebrating in the endzone. Add to that Colin Kaepernick’s resurrection to sports relevance thanks to Nike signing him as the primary pitch man for the thirtieth anniversary of their iconic “Just Do It” campaign, you know it’s going to be a hot time on and off the gridiron all season long.
In recognition of the official start of 2018 NFL season, here’s links to a trio of my essays about Mr. Kaepernick, his motivation behind his choice of demonstration, and a few suggestions for how to better deal with angry people when discussing hot-button topics — in that order.
Are You Ready for Some Football? First, Three Words from Nike: Just Do It.

If You Think This Is About the Flag
