Canfor is one of the world’s largest producers of sustainable lumber, pulp and paper. The company is a North American leader in green energy production. With a history that dates back to the 1930s, Canfor has grown to become a leader in the forest products industry.

What began with two entrepreneurs has grown to become an international team of forward-thinking and committed employees located in western Canada and the southern United States.

The Opportunity

One of the biggest points of focus, and biggest sources of GHG emissions, are Canfor’s lime kilns. Currently, natural gas is used as the fuel for heating the kilns, which is lower carbon than other fuel sources, however CanFor is confident they can go a step further by capturing some of the byproduct of their production process to displace some of the need for natural gas, further reducing the net carbon released.

The Challenge

This Challenge seeks innovative solutions for separating sulphur from a mix of methanol, sulphur, and other trace elements that result from the pulp and paper production process in order to refine the remaining gas into fuel to be used to heat the lime kilns.

Doing so offers the potential to displace a share of the natural gas currently being used to heat the lime kilns, thereby reducing CanFor Pulps’ lifecycle GHG emissions.
