The United States is at a critical point in the transition to a clean energy economy. In 2016, over 14GW of solar energy was installed in the U.S., an 88% increase from 2015. This rapid growth of solar energy has driven down installation costs by over 70% since 2009.

However, many pockets of the clean energy sector remain capital constrained. Many first movers who developed distributed generation projects in 2008–2015 remain capital starved to advance their development pipeline. Similarly, opportunities to sell distributed generation assets in this fragmented market remain limited and inefficient.

This is why CleanCapital and Generate Capital are excited to announce a new partnership, which will provide a seamless process for project owners to exit their operating clean energy projects, unleashing much needed capital to advance their development pipeline.

The partnership brings approximately $300 million to the clean energy acquisition market, focused on operating clean energy assets. The transaction harnesses Generate Capital’s proven track record of backing innovative approaches to financing clean energy infrastructure solutions. We bring liquidity to the distributed solar market and provide project owners with access to permanent, flexible capital and exit opportunities in an otherwise constrained market.

“Distributed energy resources are a critical component of the future electric grid but to date the investment opportunities have been limited. CleanCapital’s streamlined approach is attractive as it facilitates access to safe and secure opportunities to invest in these low-risk, cash flowing assets,” said Jigar Shah, President of Generate Capital.

CleanCapital delivers technology solutions to all aspects of the transaction process — from portfolio screening, valuation, due diligence, and transaction underwriting. With a focus on operating assets, the acquisition process can be simple for sellers of assets with a strong operating performance history.

Additional criteria that CleanCapital looks for includes:

  • Projects with a long-term offtake agreement of no less than 15 total years remaining, such as a power purchase agreement
  • Strong credit counter-parties and reputable equipment providers
  • Projects located in the US
  • Projects that are operating at time of acquisition

We are committed to solving large challenges with innovative capital solutions. By eliminating typical transaction barriers and making capital more accessible, together we are accelerating clean energy growth worldwide.

Our goal is to provide owners with a rapid, seamless path to liquidity. Fill out our simple origination form and we’ll let you know if your project is a good fit for CleanCapital, or email us at deals@cleancapital.com.
