Your Next Million Solar Panels
On May 3 2016, the solar industry and its friends (that includes me) celebrated the milestone of over 1 million solar installations in the U.S.! As the Solar Energy Industry Association points out, this is enough to power 5.5 million homes. While this is an incredible achievement, the next million is the real cause for excitement!
Projections have us reaching that mark in just two years, while the first million took nearly 40 years! Policy achievements like the extension of the Investment Tax Credit set the stage for our continued growth. The real shift in solar energy is from an innovative, clean solution for customers into a mainstream asset that powers businesses, homes, vehicles, as well as the grid.
This growth will be driven by investors who recognize solar assets are fantastic cash-flowing investments. With institutions like Goldman Sachs, TIAA-CREF, and the UC Regents committing billions to the sector, the signal to the rest of the investment community is clear — this asset class is mainstream.
Goldman Sachs alone is expected to increase its investment in the space to $150 billion by 2025.

These institutions love these assets because they provide excellent returns on investment. But solar investments should not just be for large institutions. The next million solar installations should be accessible investment opportunities for everyone. At CleanCapital, that is our mission.

As everyday investors enter this market, these projects will continue to become more affordable, and solar will continue to accelerate. Soon we will not need to celebrate milestones like a million systems, because they’ll be the industry norm. But, for today, congratulations to all those who made this a reality. It took 40 years of hard work to get here!
