Lipstick can be a great confidence booster. But let’s face it — by the end of the night, you’ve probably gone and licked most of it right off. Yum.

You might think that losing your sexy sheen is the worst thing about that. But studies show there’s a lot more to worry about.

As recently as 2012, the FDA tested 400 different lipstick shades. They found lead in the amounts of seven parts per million. Lead is a neurotoxin. When you have too much of it, it can wreak havoc with your brain chemistry and even mess up your IQ.

Lead is something you definitely don’t want to be making its way to your stomach any time soon.

The FDA states these low levels of lead don’t pose a health risk. But that’s debatable, especially if you’re one of those women who apply lipstick over 24 times a day. That’s a lot of lipstick lead to be swallowing over the years.

Don’t resign yourself to a life of lipstick abstinence. There are much safer lipsticks on the market. These are made with all-natural ingredients. There are brands that strive to eliminate heavy metal content while providing the lip color we’re all so fond of.

Here are the reasons to replace commercial, synthetic lipstick with natural lipstick.

1. No toxic metals

Lead isn’t the only toxic metal found in lipstick.

There are metals such as chromium. This causes vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness even in small amounts. Aluminum is linked with fevers, headaches, sore throats. Many lipsticks contain these metals in amounts of 7–35 parts per million.

Long term exposure to these toxins is an internationally acknowledged health risk. Whilst various governments have taken measures to crack down on them, it’s not enough.

Natural lipsticks are those made with none of the unnecessary synthesized heavy metals.

2. Nourish yourself

Since fruit is a popular base for a lot of natural lipsticks, they’re actually an unexpected (yet welcome!) source of vitamins.

Synthetic lipsticks pose risks to the user through the use of toxic metals. Natural lipsticks work towards upping your recommended daily nourishment, albeit in tiny doses.

With that kind of natural goodness, you might want to lick your lips from time to time. Your lipstick will be 100% safe to accidentally make a meal of.

3. Get yourself hydrated

Say a not-so-heart-felt goodbye to chapped lips. You can make DIY lipsticks out of almost anything natural. Many people choose to include ingredients known to provide great moisture.

Some businesses have already jumped on this. You can get all-natural moisturizing lipstick at the click of a button. Look out for ingredients like beeswax and jojoba oil. These have excellent moisturizing treatment with no health compromise.

4. Great for sensitive lips and allergies

Synthetic lipstick ingredients can irritate sensitive lips. It’s especially common to find lipsticks that crack the lips at the budget end. Some people are even allergic to ingredients in mass-produced lipsticks.

Natural lipsticks give you a new repertoire of ingredients to work with. You can finally start rocking a lovely red that doesn’t come with irritation. Natural ingredients tend to be gentler. You don’t have to worry about other adverse reactions like irritation or cracking.

5. Re-apply all you like

Lipstick is a flimsy thing. It’s always sticking on the edges of glasses and getting licked away. Applying synthetic lipstick frequently maximizes your consumption of toxins.

Natural lipstick means you can continue fervent re-application to your heart’s content.

6. Kind to animals

Here’s one for us animal lovers. Natural lipsticks tend to be some of the most ethically tested lipsticks you can find. The majority of all-natural cosmetic brands are also cruelty-free.

When compared side by ipsticks far outperform synthetic ones. For a gentle, safe, toxin-free coat of color, start switching out your lipsticks ASAP.
