Kali Linux 2020.1 Interface

Kali Linux is one of the best Linux distributions for ethical hacking and computer security enthusiasts.

You can install Kali Linux by replacing the existing operating system or use it via a virtual machine would be a better and safer option.

With Virtual Box, you can use Kali Linux or any other platform as a regular application in your Mac/Windows/Linux system. It is almost the same as running VLC, application or a game in your system. Also, an interesting fact that whatever you do on the Virtual Box it won’t affect your host machine.

Step by step easy installation

  1. Download the Virtual Box from the Oracle’s webite depending on you operating system.

VirtualBox download

Once you download the installer, just double click on it to install VirtualBox. Install as you do basic apps.

2. Then, download virtual image of Kali Linux from their Offensive Security website depending on your bit version.

3. Install Kali Linux on VirtualBox

Once you have installed VirtualBox and downloaded the Kali Linux image, you just need to import it to VirtualBox in order to make it work.

Here is how it will go:

Step 1: Launch VirtualBox. Click on Import button

Step 2: Next, browse the file you just downloaded and choose it to be imported . The file name should start with ‘kali linux‘ and end with .ova extension.

Once selected, proceed by clicking on Continue.

Step 3: Now, you will be shown the settings for the virtual machine you are about to import. So, you can customize them or not — that is your choice. It is okay if you go with the default settings.

Choose your memory
Create a virtual hard disk
Choose Dynamically allocate, so they will create files dynamically
Choose the size 2–4 GB will be enough

Step 4: You will now see it listed. So, just hit Start to launch it.

The default username in Kali Linux used to be root and the default password was toor. But since January 2020, Kali Linux is not using the root account. Now, the default account and password both are kali.

You should be able to login to the system with it.

You all set

Thank you for your time!
