PepsiCo is a globally recognized brand, producing and exporting a broad portfolio of food, snack & beverages under various brand names. The company’s products are distributed across more than 200 countries, resulting in annual net revenues of $65 billion.

PepsiCo has a number of sustainability goals focused on the creation of sustainable food systems. This includes packaging and byproduct goals consistent with circular economy principles.

To learn more about the innovations PepsiCo is seeking from Canadian companies, listen to the recording of the webinar, which was held on Monday, March 30, 2020.

The First Challenge: Processing Organic Waste

This Challenge seeks to procure solutions for creating local, circular economies at PepsiCo food production sites in Mexico and around the world by treating the output organic waste on-site, and deriving useful products like bio-energy and fertilizer for use locally.

Successful outcomes would shorten the distance traveled by organic material, and consequent nutrient loss, to the benefit of local farmers and communities.

The Second Challenge: Circular Economy for chips packaging

PepsiCo’s current packaging for potato chip bags is composed of a multilayer flexible packaging and as a result is not a good candidate for recycling (since there is no machinery capable of separating the layers).

PepsiCo is looking for circular economy packaging solutions for this product. Examples could include but are not limited to changes to improve recyclability, composting, and energy recovery.

About this Program

This program is funded by the Government of Canada and CanExport. It is implemented by the Canada Cleantech Alliance. The goal is to connect Canadian companies with clean technology solutions to overseas companies with sustainability goals that are seeking novel implementation solutions.
