Veggie patties made of mashed peas and carrots that could double as frozen hockey pucks are a thing of the past. The people have demanded a better culinary experience and now, with the help of funding, we’re seeing those products reach scale.

The meat alternatives industry is booming and projections indicate the market for plant-based proteins will reach $5 billion in sales by 2020. Why does this matter?

It’s a necessary shift for a clean future. In a previous newsletter, we described in detail the environmental impact at stake, “10–12% of TOTAL U.S. emissions is due to beef. That’s almost half the emissions produced by all the cars on the road!”

Let’s take a look in the kitchen to see what’s cooking.

It’s Time to Go Beyond Meat

Beyond Meat has made worldwide headlines this week when it became a public company. In its initial day on Wall Street, the stock skyrocketed up 163%, crowning it one of the best-performing opening days a company of its size has had in this era. Now it is valued around $4 Billion.

The significance of this should not be understated. The world has spoken with the loudest signal possible: money. New businesses will have reason to follow the path of Beyond Meat because of the clear and present monetary value.

Making the Impossible Possible

A vegetarian opting to eat at Burger King? Sounds impossible, but you better start getting used to it.

Impossible Foods is another company that produces plant-based meats, and it too is having its moment on the main stage. The company has partnered with Burger King to develop the “Impossible Whopper” — a purely meatless burger.

After an initial test in one market, Burger King has committed to offering the Impossible Whopper at ALL of its 7,200 restaurants across the U.S.A. by the end of 2019.

Meat Alternatives in the Tasty Clean Future

The meat industry is calibrating in the direction necessary for a sustainable future. Shifting away from beef will have an outsized agricultural impact in terms of carbon emissions:
