Company happy hours can get old, so we decided to try something new.

At the heart of Clear Street’s culture is building. We believe that if you give your employees the tools and independence to build and grow, 9 out of 10 times they’ll create something amazing. We wanted to apply this philosophy to all aspects of Clear Street’s culture, including company events. This is how “Build-Your-Own Clear Street Event” came to fruition.

Each month we give our employees the opportunity to build an event that they would actually like to attend. At the end of the month, the Clear Street team chooses one event to sponsor by providing all the tools necessary to make it happen.

Board Game and Poker Night

On December 19th, we hosted our first Build-Your-Own Clear Street Event. The selected employee-proposed event was a Board Game and Poker Night! People from every department brought their favorite games including Codenames, Werewolf, Settlers of Catan, and many more.

The biggest hit among the Clear Street crowd was Werewolf. The rules of the game are as follows: everyone is assigned a role, most players are villagers but two are werewolves. If the villagers can figure out who is a werewolf by the end of the game, they win. If the werewolves go undetected and eliminate two villagers, they win.

Needless to say, the game created a lot of deception and distrust between our players. Accusations were made and fingers were pointed. After almost an hour of playing (with a few restarts), the werewolves were able to take out two villagers in a sweeping victory. Even though the villagers were devastated, they were still good sports about the loss.

Across from the board game table, our resident MIT Blackjack player, Dean Potashner, was running the poker game.

After leaving the MIT Team, Dean started playing poker. He’s participated in the World Series of Poker since 1997. Having him at the table was only a little bit intimidating.

The poker game was an obvious hit with our traders. After about two hours of playing, one lucky trader left the table with the largest pot. The rest of the table left with their pockets a little lighter.

Small Change, Big Reward

Giving our employees the ability to manifest their ideas into a reality resulted in our most attended event to date. Build-Your-Own Clear Street Event is now fully integrated into our culture, with the next event taking place mid-February.
