Do These To Practice Self-Love And Avoid Burnout
From the perspective of a philosopher Epictetus
Nobody is strong as steel never experiencing a meltdown or breakdown in life. Everyone does. It is okay to cry and not be okay on some days. However, it is what you choose to sow into your heart and mind that matters.
It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters — Epictetus
It is also what you do to recover that determines how the situation gets better for you. Remember to care for yourself 1st. Not for your parents or family members. It is not wrong to be selfish for yourself.
Speaking of Burnout
Burnout is the state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion you face over prolonged stress. The signs are many. The last that you would not want to happen is collapse and waking up silenced. You can’t even move.
Your next steps in recovery or healing are important. Why? It shows 2 things later on:
- how you may end up in another fight or flight mode before going through breakdown again, or
- how easy you may face another battle already knowing what to do and being ready that you will stand stronger
Life is a challenge. Either you take it or leave it. And the challenges are many, but it is up to you to choose your battlefield properly. Let’s look into ways of self-love through self-care together.
What Can You Do?
The trivial matters we can tackle 1st are the following when you are experiencing a near breakdown. For more serious cases, please get a therapist.
1 — Reflect on who you hang out with
It is time to look into who are the people you hang around with. If you could not avoid your toxic family members, avoid speaking. Or at least minimize communication.
The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best — Epictetus
Choose carefully who you will turn to when you need a listening ear. Not everyone is ready to hear from you, whether your dreams or goals and problems. Sometimes, family members are not the best choice. Most of the time, your colleagues are not the best choice too.
In prosperity, it is easy to find a friend; but in adversity, it is the most difficult of all — Epictetus
If you have no family support, friends, colleagues, and religious components as strong backbones, you got to know yourself best. Because knowing yourself means you will be persistent for yourself and your rights.
If you desire to be good, begin by believing you are wicked — Epictetus
Because when you start to set your boundaries, people are going to quarrel or fight with you. People will start hating or disliking you. They will resist because they no longer could be a master above you. They can’t use you anymore.
2 — Words of Affirmations
We are programmed by our parents culturally and religiously. Sometimes, none of it came from the culture or religious teachings, except old thoughts as well as expectations stem from life in the villages.
Therefore if anyone is unhappy, let him remember that he is unhappy because of himself alone — Epictetus
What you tell yourself is a love language between you and your inner spirit. That inner voice is evil if you do not practice mindfulness. To know if something is born out of culture or religion is important. Ignorance is not bliss.
Set your mantra right each morning, evening, and night. It need not be a chunk of litanies, but just a few philosophies you hold onto. I always mentioned under my breath:
This shall come to a pass…I am highly favored, greatly blessed, and deeply loved — Romans
Either you hold onto something or you fall for everything. That is where the stress and issues come from. What you speak becomes you. What is your love language?
3 — Adjust your sleeping time
This is the most crucial part of recovering from near burnout or burnout. To be able to practice mindfulness and awareness before burnout is a victory one holds.
How do you know you are going to burn out? Your body tells you signs. For example, the back of your neck and shoulder blade areas will give you painful signs. Sometimes, your neck feels like snapping.
This can be signs of blood pressure increased. Do not ignore symptoms and signs from the body. Visit a doctor, not a psychic or sorcerer.
Why sleep is important in recovering from burnout? It gives you clarity and unwavering focus the next day. It prevents weight increment and the need to have more calories intake which leads to obesity. Having adequate sleep means avoiding diseases like stroke.
It should be a continuous healthy practice, not just a 1-night or 1-week attempt. Keep the consistent sleeping pattern.
4 — Meditate or do exercises
Some people meditated and some indulge in exercises. You have all the means to do it. It does not necessarily have a room without noise and meditation because your inner voices will overcome you at your beginner’s level.
Practice yourself for Heaven’s sake in little things, and then proceed to greater — Epictetus
I used to be seated in a congregation which does meditation every week with an expert. He is not any Tom, Dick, or Harry. On every other day, I have a counter in my hands to meditate on what was entrusted to me. Just simple ones.
It takes more than just a good-looking body. You got to have a heart and soul to go with it — Epictetus
Are we not guilty? I am. I still struggle between the physical and spiritual side, but as I went along day by day, I knew what works. Less is more but increase it gradually. Don’t cause yourself the stress.
5 — Change Your Diet
Sometimes, the added stress and unhappiness stem from you being overweight or obese. It affects your confidence.
It contributes to the emotional rub above the external factors like work and family issues. So knowing what you put into your body matters a lot. You would not want health complications while going through stress.
If you are looking into weight loss or fat loss, care for the food you eat. Avoiding rice totally is not a good move. You may cut it in half. Increase in other proteins like vegetables, fruits, and meats. Too much of everything is the absolute wrong move.
It is nature of the wise to resist pleasure, but a foolish to be a slave to them — Epictetus
Cut down sugar if you are not used to avoiding it 100%. It is a number 1 killer as it increases your weight a lot. Even too much caffeine disrupts your body’s ability to curb appetite, disturbed cortisol, makes your sleeping pattern upside down, and so much more.
Check out with a doctor for an ideal way to go about in your weight loss or fat loss goals.
6 — Learn to say ‘No’ to others
When you keep taking every thrash people to throw into your way, you will collapse one day. Learn to reject others. Even if it is someone from your family, you got to learn to reject others.
Enough it is for you to be rejected and being secondary in many things. It is time to be firm by saying NO. A ‘no’ opened up many other ‘yes’ opportunities for yourself.
These are some ways you can consider self-care if you love yourself 1st. Remember to practice self-love.
- Reflect on who you hang out with
- Words of Affirmation
- Set your sleeping time right
- Meditate & Exercise
- Change your diet
- Learn to say ‘No’
