What is Imposter Syndrome ?
Imposter syndrome, also known as imposter phenomenon or fraud syndrome, is a psychological pattern characterized by persistent doubt concerning one’s abilities or accomplishments. Despite evidence of success, individuals struggling with imposter syndrome feel like they are intellectual or professional imposters, fearing exposure as a fraud.
Common signs and symptoms writers experience.
- Constant self-critique
- Excessive self-editing
- Procrastination
- Avoiding challenges
- Low self-esteem
- Intense fear of failure
- Discounting praise
- Overworking
All of these things can stop you from becoming a Legendary writer, and what a pity that would be.
Why does imposter syndrome affect writers specifically?
Imposter syndrome can be paralyzing for any writer, but it’s especially difficult for newbies. When you don’t have any “professional” accomplishments, you may feel like you can’t compete with those who do.
Comparison Trap: The writing world is full of established authors, and social media can make it easy to constantly compare your work to others. Seeing the success of peers can trigger feelings of inadequacy and make your own accomplishments feel insignificant.
The “Solo Act” Myth: Writing is often seen as a solitary pursuit. While this can be true in some cases, it can also lead to feelings of isolation and a lack of external validation. This can exacerbate feelings of self-doubt and make the writer feel like they’re the only one struggling.
You may also be surprised to know that published authors are not exempt from imposter syndrome. Celebrated author Maya Angelou once said, “Each time I write a book, every time I face that yellow pad, the challenge is so great. I have written eleven books, but each time I think, ‘Uh oh, they’re going to find out now. I’ve run a game on everybody and they’re going to find me out.’
How to overcome Imposter syndrome as a writer ?
Acknowledge Feelings:Start by keeping a journal. Whenever you experience feelings of self-doubt , write them down, and be specific about why you’re feeling this way. Writing down your doubts can help you see how negative they are, making it easier to fight them.
Remember, feelings are important, they are just feelings — and do not necessarily reflect reality. Feeling unqualified doesn’t mean you actually are.
Reframe Negative Thoughts:Means questioning irrational beliefs and looking at real examples of your skills and successes. Instead of feeling unsure and inadequate, focus on times when your writing was successful or praised. This helps build confidence and fights Imposter Syndrome by showing that you are capable and talented.
Seek support :Seeking support involves talking about your feelings with people you trust, like mentors & friends. They can offer perspective and encouragement, helping you see things in a new light. By sharing your struggles with others, you can feel supported and gain insights that help you overcome Imposter Syndrome.
Review your progress:It involves taking time to reflect on your achievements and growth over time. It’s about looking back at where you started, what you’ve accomplished, and how far you’ve come as a writer. This process helps you appreciate your journey, identify areas of improvement, and celebrate your successes, which can boost your confidence and motivation.
Develop a Quick response plan: It involves preparing yourself with strategies to combat Imposter Syndrome when it strikes. This plan can include techniques like positive affirmations, mindfulness exercises, or specific actions that remind you of your capabilities and strengths as a writer.
Example:Whenever self-doubt creeps in before submitting an article, I remind myself of positive feedback I’ve received from editors and readers in the past. This helps me refocus on my abilities and confidently move forward with my work.
Understand Your Strengths and Weaknesses:Build up your confidence by becoming more aware of your strengths and weaknesses.
Once you have a deeper understanding of your strengths and weaknesses, you won’t have to spend so much time worrying that you’re not qualified for certain tasks, projects or roles.
Overcome Perfectionism:Overcome perfectionist habits by taking regular breaks, using relaxation techniques, and focusing on the bigger picture.
At the same time, remember that mistakes are a part of life, and that, if you don’t hit a particular goal or get something in on time, it’s not the end of the world.
DON’T STOP WRITING:Don’t allow anything, including your own feelings of self-doubt, to stop you from writing. The only way to become a better writer is to become a more prolific writer.
Lastly remember ,Give yourself permission to suck. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Nothing great ever was.
