Stressing SUCKS!

Nobody enjoys having a lot of stress or constantly worrying about what comes next. Have you ever just wished for a break from it all? I sure have. Stressing and making things more complicated doesn’t help at all — it just makes things worse and way more difficult. But let me tell you about some simple tricks to be more productive, and I’m confident your life will get a lot better.

  1. Time Blocking

Start by using time blocking. Allocate specific time slots for each task you have on your plate. For instance, if you’ve got homework, estimate how much time it will take, and repeat this process for all your daily tasks. Using a journal or an online planner can help organize this.

The key is to prevent spending too much time on one task, leaving insufficient time for the next. Overworking on a single task can jeopardize completing everything on your to-do list. Once you’ve figured out the time needed for each task, if you find yourself exceeding the estimated time for one task, don’t just move on to the next one.

This can lead to unfinished work and stress. Instead, redistribute some time from other tasks to ensure the incomplete one gets the attention it needs. For example, if you allocated an hour for homework but realize it’s taking longer, take 15 minutes from another task and add it to the homework. This approach ensures you finish everything on time without compromising quality. Remember, giving up or moving on prematurely is not the solution; if you start something, make sure to see it through.

2. Be ORGANIZED!

The second thing you need to do is declutter and organize. How do you expect to get everything done if you’re working in a messy and dirty environment? Keep everything organized, keep your room or work space clean, because working with mess surrounding you is going to cause you to stress out a lot and you will be more likely to just give up. Working in a cleaner environment will make it easier for you to find things and it also makes your mind more relaxed.

3. Prioritize Your Tasks FIRST

Thirdly, it’s crucial to prioritize your tasks and refrain from taking on additional responsibilities for others. While accepting requests may seem respectful and caring, it’s essential to remember that your well-being should come first. Focus on completing your own tasks before diving into work for others.

While declining tasks from others might make you appear mean, it’s vital to value your own well-being. If you’re already dealing with enough stress from your own tasks, why burden yourself with more? Completing your own responsibilities can be challenging enough, and taking on additional tasks only makes it worse. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid accepting tasks from others.

Only consider taking on additional requests once you’ve completed your own. Stick to the principle of prioritizing yourself. If you feel up to it after finishing your tasks, you can choose to help others, but only if you genuinely feel like it. If you’re tired or just not in the mood, it’s perfectly acceptable to take a break — you deserve it. While declining tasks may affect your reputation, it’s crucial to prioritize what’s best for you in the long run.

4. Limit The Distractions

The fourth step is to reduce distractions around you. Constant interruptions can lead to wasted time and lower the quality of your work. These distractions could come from your phone, the TV, or anything else that hinders your productivity. Take active measures to eliminate these distractions. Turn off the TV, put your phone on silent — if the distraction is within your control, take action to prevent it from interfering with your work. For optimal quality work, ensure there’s nothing causing you to pause every two minutes.

Maintain good mental focus by avoiding frequent drifting of your thoughts. When engaged in a task, keep your attention solely on that task. Resist the urge to think about dinner plans or tomorrow’s agenda; concentrate only on the present moment and the task at hand.

5. Single-Tasking

The fifth important practice is to focus on one task at a time. Never attempt to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously, as it leads to stress, overthinking, and isn’t the most effective way to accomplish things. While multitasking may seem time-saving, it comes at a cost. Handling two tasks at once makes it challenging to invest genuine quality and effort into each one, causing mental strain.

While time efficiency is appealing, multitasking is neither healthy nor efficient. Whether dual-tasking is a good approach depends on the nature of the tasks at hand. If the tasks are entirely different, it’s best to keep them separate. However, if there’s a connection between them, doing them both together might be worth considering. Ultimately, the decision is yours. If you genuinely believe you can manage both tasks at your best capacity, go ahead. But if you anticipate stress and a lack of effort, it’s advisable to refrain from multitasking.

6. Set Achievable Tasks

The last suggestion I have for you is to establish clear and doable tasks. Ensure that your tasks are something you can realistically begin and complete. Avoid having tasks that go from mopping the floor to flying to the moon in the next step. It’s essential to make sure that all the tasks you set for the day are achievable by you and can be done to the best of your abilities.
