Project update 2 September

The bridge is now open for pedestrians and cyclists following a temporary closure to cyclists and emergency vehicles earlier in August, which has now been lifted following the completion of some crucial repairs to the concrete supporting structure.

As noted in our earlier blog post, detailed inspections have been carried out by engineers which have shown the extents of the concrete repairs are worse than previously identified. Every repair has been assessed to decide how the works will be carried out. These include structural repairs that require extreme care and so a limited number can be completed at any one time.

We are reviewing options for re-opening the bridge while repairs are ongoing, but the planned closure is in place until later in September. We are reminding people preparing for the return to school that the bridge remains closed to vehicles for the next few weeks and ask that wherever possible people use public transport, walking or cycling as an alternative.
