Money Is Not Everything

If you don’t feel worthy of achieving that goal you’ll never achieve it.

Have you ever heard the saying:

Dress for the job you want. Not the job you have.

The same is true for wealth. You don’t get rich until you feel rich. You have to define what “rich” means for you. So you can aim for it.

You Don’t Become Rich Until You Feel Rich

Hi, I’m Rebecca and this is my publication CliffView Life. I am going to be dissecting all 45 lessons in a YouTube video by Dan Martell: I’m 45. If you’re in your 20s or 30s, watch this.

Dan Martell is a successful entrepreneur. He is now dedicated to teaching others so they can achieve their dreams just as he has — if they are willing to put in the work. In this video, he shares and briefly explains 45 lessons he found on his way to the success he has today.

Why? Why am I going to go through every single one of the 45 lessons Dan shares? So I can learn and pass on what I have learned to you.

You have to say yes so you can learn what works for you and doesn’t work. You have to say yes so you can challenge yourself.

This is Lesson #4: You don’t get rich until you feel rich

On the surface Dan is talking about money. Except he is not talking about how to make more money so you become rich. He is talking about how you view wealth.

Wealth is not exactly the same as money. Just like economics is not about money. Money is an easy tool to explain economics and wealth.

Economics is the study of the value of services and goods. Money is often used to define economics because we trade money (and time) for goods and services. Wealth is similar.

Wealth is frequently defined by money. Wealth is the abundance of something that adds significant value to your life. Some people may not be wealthy financially but are wealthy in relationships, talent, spirituality, health, or happiness.

Rich people can afford the life that gives them the freedom to do what they want with their time. They can take the vacations or buy the assets that they want. They can afford to show off.

Not all rich people fly on private jets or live luxurious lifestyles. Some of them are happy with the average car, average sized home and don’t indulge in luxuries (or show off) even though they could simply because it is not who they are. (Two examples: Warren Buffett and Former US President Jimmy Carter.)

Some “rich” people have all the appearances of being rich yet have massive debt. Or they are hiding personal issues behind showing off the life they want you to think they have.

You don’t have to look rich to be rich. You do have to feel rich to be rich.

You have to decide what wealth (or freedom number or happiness) is for you. Then you can start working towards it.

Be cautious. The goal posts can move with changes in interests and life situations but resist the temptation to constantly be moving them. Or you’ll never feel like you’ve reached the wealth you want.

For me I want to be in a position where I can by something twice with cash before I buy it. I do this already because with many purchases there are the hidden addons that you don’t think about when buying something. Like insurance, maintenance, and the consumable essentials to use it (gas for a car, memory cards for a camera or power for a house).

Show Up For What You Want

How does dressing for the job you want not the job you have work into you don’t become rich until you feel rich?

Start acting like it — within reason.

Don’t put yourself into massive debt to keep up appearances. Just because you want the high end sports car doesn’t mean you need to go get one today. Just because the C-level people are wearing $5000 suits doesn’t mean you have to instantly be wearing those suits. Start working towards it.

You can show up to work in the clothing you can afford that is well taken care of and still look like you are dressed well enough to represent your company.

You can show up to work with an average attitude or you can show up with enthusiasm for the job you have but don’t want permanently and do it well. You can study on the side for the better job that you want. You can show interest at work so you can be given new projects and opportunities to learn.

Show up for everything you do prepared for it. Have your research done for that case. Show up knowing how to use the equipment you’ll be using. (At minimum know enough that you can do the basics and be willing to learn.)

My uncle was a well respected lawyer because he always showed up prepared to everything. We would often hear from judges and other lawyers that when he was involved in a case they knew they had to be ready.

I watched a documentary on a successful actor a few years ago. I don’t remember exactly what actor (Might of been Tom Hanks). I do remember this one thing from it. They almost lost an acting job because they kept showing up to set not prepared. They didn’t know the lines or what was being filmed that day. Either the lead actor or director told them to start showing up prepared or they were out. This actor realized that by not knowing their work they were holding production back. Since then they always show up prepared and expect everyone else to be prepared.

Do the same in your life. Take responsibility for what is expected of you in your position. Be an example for those who work under you and around you. If you want to keep moving up then learn, be open to new ideas, and put some effort into how you show up. (Maybe keep the save the well worn clothing for home. If you’re in a uniform make sure it’s clean.)

You might not earn “rich” amounts of money. But you can be wealthy in your personal relationships, friendships, work relationships, happiness, health, and spiritually. Only if you want to be.

Steps to becoming wealthy:

  1. Define the target. Only adjust if absolutely necessary.
  2. Decide you want it.
  3. Show up.
  4. Earn it.

You did not wake up to be mediocre.

By the way, even though I qualify for payments on my stories I have decided to stop. I want to help those who are like me. Who are on the starting line and need someone to show them it is possible. I want them to have access to stories that can inspire them to keep going. If you are able and wish to support me, you can do so through buymeacoffee.com/cliffviewlife. Thank you. (Yes, I drink coffee!)
