Turning a Dream to a Goal.
You do deserve to achieve your dreams
How many times have you thought of something that you really wanted. You decide to buy it or go do it. You are inspired and excited. And then that idea fades away. Time passes, life happens, commitments to family and friends happen, work happens. One day you suddenly realize that you have not done anything towards it.
You forgot about it that idea. That dream. Yet, it’s still there waiting for you.
It happens to everyone. Everyone everyday gets ideas. Ideas that are dreams to achieve. Some to changes our lives. Some to go do something amazing for ourselves. Some to do for the benefit of others.
Why We Give Up on Dreams
Sometimes we give up on our dreams because a situation in our lives takes precedence. That mountain biking trip is suddenly less important than paying the furnace repair bill.
Many times we genuinely forget. We move on to something else in our lives. Without any reminders that dream of a road trip in the Yukon fades away.
There are no vision boards, posters, or pictures with the road trip on it. That is the benefit of visual reminders. They remind us of our desires. They remind us to get to work because you want to have X.
What to do When You Remember That Dream
Step 1 of Turning a Dream in a Goal
When you have a dream goal come back to you do not allow yourself to forget about it.
Write it down.
A dream written down with a date becomes a goal. A goal broken down into steps becomes a plan. A plan backed by action makes your dreams come true. ~ Greg Reid
That’s all write it down.
I want to go on a 10-day road trip in the Yukon!
Okay. So about that quote up there. That you might of read. Or just read….
“….with a date…”
I want to go on a 10-day road trip in the Yukon in the fall of 2026.
You might say that is not a specific enough date. My response is it is for me. It is roughly 18-months away. So 1-year from now I should add a more specific date.
Going on a 10-day road trip in the Yukon was a dream of mine in January 2020. I forgot about it. Why? Because life happened. I didn’t forget about it because of the pandemic. I know if I had of committed to it, I would of gone by now. The pandemic would only have pushed it down the road. Instead of going in the fall of 2020, I would likely have done in 2021 or at the latest 2022.
Step 2 of Turning a Dream into a Goal.
Make a plan.
That is a stumbling block of all obstacles.
Just like how I don’t need a super specific date at this moment. I don’t need a list of very detailed plans at this stage. All I need is a rough outline of steps to take. With acknowledgement that this plan is going to change and become more datailed as I make progress.
I want to go on a 10-day road trip in the Yukon in the fall of 2026. First things I need the $$$$$$ to do it. Maybe not a $100,000. But I need money for:
- Flights,
- Rental of RV,
- Food and beverages,
- Gas,
- Hiking gear, clothing and other equipment.
I don’t know exactly how much money I need. I do know I need to save. I will figure out exactly how much as I get closer to going and start researching flights, rentals, and equipment I need.
All I need to do right now is to set up a savings account and consistently put money in. How much money? At this moment in time not much because I have other priorities to pay for first. (Dentist. New laptop. Equipment and materials for projects.)
Step 3 of Turning a Dream into a Goal.
Take action.
The consistent action towards my plan is simple. Put a few dollars in savings every week. A few literally being $5.
$5 a week is not going to get me enough to go to the Yukon for a 10-day road trip in the fall of 2026. That is okay right now. All I am doing is building momentum and reminding myself regularly of my goal.
I will start putting more money to the side for this trip consistently as I gain the ability to.
The much needed hidden benefit for me in this situation is I have to find a way to earn more income. So I can pay for my goal trip to the Yukon.
It is possible for dreams to turn into goals. If you are willing to keep reminding yourself of them and you take action consistently towards them.
Stop holding yourself back. You chase your dreams. They don’t chase you.
