JRE at Youtube

Randall Carlson recently appeared on the JRE podcast. For the most part, it was fine; Randall ran through all of his greatest hits (the glaciations, meteor impacts, the Younger dryas, etc), which was nice to get a refresh on, but in general, nothing particularly new.

However, something disturbed me. For those of you, who care to listen, it starts at the 2:15:00 mark:

RANDALL: We’re supposedly in the midst of the sixth great mass extinction right now that we’re causing. And… Like you said earlier, to recognize that there have been these gigantic catastrophes and mass extinctions in Earth’s history is not in any way to say, “Well, we just should have a free hand in doing this”

JOE: Of course…

(my emphasis)

They start with a somewhat fishy proposition that current mass extinction (hinting at climate change) is nothing new, and finish it with a disclaimer at the end. There is nothing “supposed” about the current mass extinction. It is a scientific fact (and they both know it), which is why they soften it with the disclaimer that follows.
