Author on first morning of spill in Dahab, Egypt

The word Dahab means gold in Arabic. It’s also the name of a small town nestled between mainland Egypt and Saudi Arabia on the Southeastern coast of the Sinai peninsula.

Dahab is a mere stone's throw away from the Saudi Arabian coast. Ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration. You could, however, swim across the red sea to get there.

You wouldn't want to do that, though. Because A. you’d probably get shot and B. Dahab is amazing; you don’t want to swim to Saudi (trust me).

There’s a reason they called this place Dahab. Everything is coated in a layer of gold. The sun glazes the mountains, the sand, and the whole desert in an airy film of molten gold.

Anyone that’s ever been here knows it’s a special place.

The warm water is crystal clear, and vibrant corals sculpt the underwater landscape into a paradise for the exotic fish that call this home.

If you come in winter, you’ll swim with green sea turtles and if you’re lucky, whale sharks and dolphins too.
