It is time to ditch the car

“Are you a personal trainer?” a girl I just met asked me.

She, same as most of the people I meet, assumed I train at the gym.

Though my body is far from that of a personal trainer, at that moment, I was flattered.

The thing is, I don’t like going to the gym. The idea to sweat in a concrete box where everyone else is sweating doesn’t motivate me.

It disgusts me.

My secret for having a toned body is simple, yet it surprises most people: I don’t own a car.

I never had a car. I don’t even know how to drive.

When I was in college, I couldn’t afford to buy a car. As time passed, I developed an issue with cars.

First, I saw the effect of cars on the environment. As the number of wheels on the road increased in Prishtina — the city I live, the air quality got worse. Sometimes during the winter, the air quality index showed the air I breathe is hazardous.

That’s no joke. A quarter of worldwide CO2 emission comes from transport — mainly motor vehicles such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles.
