How to Publish on ‘Climate Desk’

Medium is about conversation and participation. We want your ideas, and we want to connect you to other thoughtful people with insights and interesting points of view.

Climate Desk is a partnership between The Atlantic, CityLab, Grist, The Guardian, the Huffington Post, Medium, Mother Jones, Reveal, Slate and WIRED covering the political, social, and economic impacts of climate change. You can be part of it, too.

There are several ways you can join the Climate Desk discussion on Medium.

First, we occasionally commission works of substantial original journalism that 1) reveal something new and 2) have the potential to convene high quality conversations about topics that matter. Professional writers can pitch us directly by email at [email protected] (cc: me at [email protected]).

We take the position that global warming is real and will have a disastrous impact on the planet and human society if it is not managed immediately; that human activity is a substantial contributor; and that innovation as well as policy can mitigate the effects. Ringing the alarm is important, but we want to highlight a different kind of narrative. In particular, we’re looking for non-obvious stories that point the way to solutions, by way of stories about the people working to overcome the problem and the underlying science, technologies, economics and politics of change.

We have a very high bar when it comes to making these assignments, but there are other ways to participate if you are not a professional writer.

The easiest way to join the conversation is to write a response to any of the articles you see published here. To respond, simply go to the bottom of any post and begin typing in the form you see. You will need to be logged in to your Medium account to publish your comments.

If you want to start a new discussion, publish a post on Medium and tag it ‘Climate Desk’.

We are periodically reading the responses and newly tagged posts. If we like yours we will request that you submit it to the publication. If we accept your submission, we will feature it in Viewpoints or our Letters to the Editor sections.

A few things you need to know:

  • If you submit your post to the publication, you grant permission to all of the Climate Desk partners to republish your work in its current form at their discretion.
  • We cannot request your post if you have elected to turn off email notifications in your profile settings.
  • We cannot request your post if it has already been accepted into another publication.
  • We are looking for thoughtful posts that move the discussion forward. If you plan to post something for submission, it is a generally a good idea to take the time to catch up on what’s been published so far, and stay on point.
  • Use the tag ‘Climate Desk’ — this will provide the highest visibility for us to discover and review your post.

Thanks for reading. We look forward to seeing your contributions.
