The year of 2020 has been notorious for bringing nothing but doom and gloom into the world. Between the outbreak of COVID-19, the devastating wildfires in Australia, protests for the Black Lives Matter Movement, and a whole lot more — we’ve barely had the chance to take a breath.

With it being half way through November, it won’t be long until the month of December is finally upon us. Meaning the merry joys of Christmas is right around the corner. Many families choose to stay in the comfort of their own home to revel in the traditional Christmas festivities. Others find their happiness in various different locations across the UK, away from their homes. However, I recognise — due to the pandemic — it’ll be slightly difficult to do that this year. Regardless, that doesn’t stop you from planning ahead for next year’s festive season.

According to research, I have managed to stumble across five glorious Christmas destinations situated here in the UK;

1. Nottingham

The city in central England’s Midlands region, with a population of 787,610, holds vibrant Christmas markets every year. An ice rink and magical family-friendly pantomimes bring in over 2.9M tourists, with a divine Winter Wonderland attraction helping to boost the Christmas cheer across Nottingham.

Visit Nottinghamshire

2. Edinburgh

Edinburgh is Scotland’s famous capital, with a population of 537,000, and somewhere I have personally always wanted to visit for the Christmas period. The city, of course, is noted for Edinburgh Castle that comes alive over Christmas time. Enchanting lights, a tree maze and the markets in the Princes Street Gardens plasters smiles on everyone’s faces. 2.6M people travelled to experience these attractions last Christmas, an increase of nearly 5% from 2018.

The Drum

3. London

The capital of England, known for the iconic ‘Big Ben’ clock tower and the London Eye that overlooks the Thames River — a population of over 9M. The city is mostly recognised for its captivating Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park over Christmas time. (An attraction I hope to visit one year). Its festive beauty brings in around 3M visits each year due to the sheer enjoyment it gives and the luxury of free entry. Naturally, there’s also a flurry of Christmas markets, ice rinks, and film screenings that tourists can’t help but flock to whilst they’re there.

The Rembrandt

4. York

York is a cathedral city in Northeast England with a population of over two thousand. The city has been named ‘The UK’s most festive city’ as its Santa’s Grotto, pantomimes and Winter Wonderland lights up the historical streets in December.

Visit York

5. Cardiff

Last but most definitely not least, the capital of Wales which is the UK’s eleventh-largest city has a population of 478,000. Visitors can relish the perfect Christmas markets, the alluring fairy lights, and the beautifully choreographed ballet performances. An ice walk and a private tour of Santa’s Grotto are the best attractions to entertain the kids, along with the Alpine food and drink area for the adults.

Five magnificent UK destinations that promise to bring the Christmas spirit to life and give you enjoyment like no other. After the year we’ve had, Christmas will no doubt be hard to celebrate this winter. But, that doesn’t mean there is no light at the end of this tunnel. There is and once we get to the end, Christmas will be celebrated in all it’s true glory as it should be.
