Who Am I?

Hi everyone!

My name is Chloe and I am 20-year old, pizza loving aspiring writer. I have always found it difficult to describe who I am as a person. I don’t want to overcompliment myself and sound vain, but I also don’t want to be too self-deprecating. My personality varies, and I guess it depends who you are to which side you’ll see. I can be crazy, whacky and quirky — but only if I’m comfortable around you. I’m friendly and easy-going with practically everyone I meet. I can be flirtatious and funny if I am interested in you. But most of all, I find that I am usually the quiet one of a group. Not intentionally. I just don’t tend to speak a lot.

Studying Creative and Professional Writing comes in handy in that sense; I’m better at writing my words instead of vocalising them. Although, I haven’t always been interested in writing. When I was a child, I loved to read — Jacqueline Wilson was my favourite author. I would take a book of hers off the shelf, start typing it up on the computer and pretend I was writing my own novel. My imagination was wild back then.

When I hit my teenage years, I became addicted to boybands, concerts and staying up late. Sadly, books and writing were put on the backburner. For a while, my career in mind was to work with children. It was more of a safety option than anything, I had no idea what else to do and I just so happened to be good with kids.

When I was 17 and retaking my GCSE’s, it was half way through the academic year that I decided to sit down and read a book for pleasure. A lightbulb flashed before my eyes as my book of choice sparked a story idea. I reluctantly put the novel down, grabbed my laptop and started typing away. I remember the satisfactory feeling I relished once I had finished. Leaning back on my chair with a proud smile drawn on my lips, I looked at the clock. My mind believed it had only been 20 minutes, but in reality, 2 hours had passed and I had no idea.

I had been sucked into the words I was forming on the page that, to my surprise, I had completely lost track of time. That’s the moment I realised that creativity and venturing off into a fictional world far away from my own brings me happiness. Which is why I decided to study Creative and Professional writing at University.

Although you don’t necessarily need a degree to become a writer, University was an aspect of life that I wanted to experience. I am hoping this course will bring me extra knowledge and experience to help further my career along once I have completed my 3-year study.

What I would like to do varies in the writing industry. The primary goal is to publish fictional novels — my main genres include romance, mystery and fantasy. However, I would love to dive in deeper to the industry and potentially work for a publishing house — editorial, marketing or sales. I would also very much enjoy writing successful articles or blog posts on a topic that I am passionate about. I’m hoping working incredibly hard with a positive mindset, along with what I will gain from this course, will help me get to where I want to be.
