Gen Z is considered the generation that will change the world. From diverse thoughts and perspectives to innovative ideas, we are set to take over the world. Unless, of course, something else beats us to it.

Artificial Intelligence, you say?

In a world of rapid change, Artificial Intelligence (AI) currently fuels most of this growth and can completely alter the direction of the future. While Gen Z has and continues to be fully immersed in the digitization of every aspect of life, the rise of Artificial Intelligence within the next few years may completely alter our plans.

But don’t trip. There’s hope-

So…not only will COVID-19 affect our careers, but so will AI. A common concern with AI is that it will replace people in jobs entirely, if not the job itself. However, it is expected that lower-level jobs are expected to be performed by humans less. While workers with extensive experience may maintain their jobs due to tenure or seniority, young professionals may find that entry-level jobs are going to cease to exist as AI will eventually fill those types of positions. With education being more accessible and therefore applicants being more educated, the job process will become increasingly cutthroat.

Now, here is where it gets tricky. In order for Gen Z to survive in the workforce with AI snatching opportunities, we need to be adaptable to the ever-changing market. And, I hate to break it to you, but bachelor degrees will no longer guarantee employment. It’s possible that obtaining a master’s or Ph.D. may eventually become a prerequisite for Gen Z to enter the workforce. On the other hand, it is also possible that Gen Z may be judged on work experience rather than a degree. With experience providing informal education and similar credentials, an extensive resume may just get you the job. My prediction is that Gen Z will rise against being glued to machines, being stuck at cubicles, and unrealistic requirements, instead curating an alternative employment environment for themselves.

To successfully live in an AI inclusive society, it appears best if most Gen-Zers work for themselves and that is exactly what is happening. According to Entrepreneur, the demographic is more concerned with entrepreneurship as about 41 percent plan to create their own businesses and write their own checks.

A 2016 survey conducted by Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University, provides insight into the public’s perception of AI’s future potential, says The Conversation. The article further states that respondents indicated a 50 percent likelihood that the capabilities of AI will exceed human Intelligence by 2040 to 2050. However, other technology leaders have predicted this shift in humanity will occur much earlier.

Regardless of when the merge between Artificial Intelligence and humanity occurs, stay ready so that you don’t have to get ready.
