The life of a solo photographer/entrepreneur can be lonely and difficult to conquer. Let’s face it, there’s not a lot of direct skills that come from high school or even college to prepare photographers for the kinds of things they face every day:

1. Client Management

2. Invoicing and Pricing

3. Budgets and Spending

4. Branding and Marketing

5. Camera Skills & Editing

At the heart of it all, I think most photographers (and any professional) are looking for two key things — freedom and flexibility. They want to be their own boss, they want to make their own schedule, they want to choose their own clients, and they want to make more money than at a full-time job.

It’s that last one though — the money — where a lot of people get discouraged.

There’s this notion in the beginning of “I just need to book x amount of clients to make x amount of dollars.” On the surface, it all sounds so easy, doesn’t it? Just put your head down and go after X number of jobs. Getting paid to do what you love is addicting, and the $$$ part seems to steal attention and get the spotlight. But what are the drivers of that revenue?

Financial success often times is the only thing you see when comparing yourself to your peers. But the reality can be harsh on how anyone truly reaches that mark of freedom and flexibility. Managing and getting clients is tough. Creating invoices and getting your package pricing is tedious. Creating and growing your own brand to be recognized in the industry takes time and hard work. So where in the world do you even start?!

The good news is you are NOT alone! There are communities and resources out there that help connect photographers and other creatives to help each other solve their most pressing issues. Our favorite community is Rising Tide Society. If you’re a photographer and need a little encouragement, help, or just want to meet other creatives, you should really check them out!

And then there’s the Six Figure Photography Podcast, which is hosted by International Wedding Photographer (and all-around great guy) Ben Hartley. Recently our founder Gavin Wade was invited to be a guest on the SFP Podcast. He offered up some great insight and tips on how he and his wife created a six-figure photography business of their own in less than 3 years. Gavin and Ben talked photography, clients, print sales, and why CloudSpot was created to help grow his business in the right way.
