A quick guide to the AWS migration tools for Azure users

I was recently asked what AWS tools should be considered when migrating from on-premises to AWS, but for someone with Azure experience and little AWS migration experience. This short post answers that question and shows the effectiveness of the new Azure comparison feature in CloudPegboard.com.

I love questions like this since it really shows the value of how Cloud Pegboard (a completely free service) structures cloud knowledge so that it can be effectively queried to save cloud users lots of time as well as surfacing information that might otherwise have been missed.

Here’s how I answered this particular question. First select the Services Table view from the header menu. Enter “migration” in the search box, and then select the “Azure compare” perspective. That’s it!

Cloud Pegboard’s Services Table, filtered by “migration,” with the Azure Compare perspective (perspectives show relevant columns)

The result is a list of 15 AWS services that relate to migration. Since the user in this case was asking about equivalences to the Azure services that they are more experienced with, they can look at the Azure column to find the equivalent AWS services. In some cases, there are AWS services that don’t have Azure equivalents, and these are presented too so that you don’t miss out on possible opportunities.

Once you see the list of services, you can then use the link to jump to the Cloud Pegboard detailed datasheet for each service or jump to the AWS documentation.

As a business goal and program, there’s a lot more to migration than the tools — a discussion which is beyond the scope of this quick guide to finding the tools. I do however want to at least point out that AWS has great teams dedicated to helping you to justify and then plan migrations (contact your account team). There is also a rich ecosystem of partners that can be found on this dedicated list of “AWS Migration Competency Partners.”

UPDATE: Wow, we know the cloud changes fast, but 4 hours after I published this blog, AWS announced “Migration Evaluator.

This is just a tiny sliver of the information available in Cloud Pegboard and the productivity it enables. Explore the other features of this free service and let me know if you have any use cases for cloud knowledge that are not well addressed. Finally, here’s another quick post showing how you can keep up with the rapid pace of cloud changes: How To Keep Up With AWS Announcements.
