Over 500 developers descended on the Money20/20 Hackathon on Oct 21–22 at the Venetian resort in Las Vegas, NV. Developers had 24 hours to utilize Clover APIs and SDKs to help merchants streamline their business. First Data, Clover’s parent company, sponsored the event.

This year Clover challenged participants to hack solutions aimed at improving full and quick service restaurants. Also, we asked developers to think about how to integrate IoT devices in merchants’ workflows. Developers impressed us with the wide range of solutions helping merchants run their businesses more efficiently.

Each team had three minutes to demo their hacks and wow our judges — Vinay Pai (Senior VP of Engineering), James Cha (Developer Relations Manager), Rachel Ramsay (Developer Support Engineer), and Kedar Deo (Product Manager, Clover Go).

The competition was so fierce that we expanded our sponsor prize to the top two teams: BluWave and Tapay.

Prizes

Both winning teams walked away with up to $13,000 in prizes. Every member of the winning team received:

  • $2,500 in travel to Clover HQ and Gyft cards. Winners will be brought to our Sunnyvale, CA office to help bring their hack to our App Market.
  • Signed Nascar swag. First Data and Clover are currently sponsoring NASCAR driver Kyle Larson this fall. This prize includes NASCAR gear personally signed by Kyle.
  • Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 Wireless Mobile Bluetooth Speaker.
  • Vilros Raspberry Pi 3 RetroPie Arcade Gaming Kit.

Clover’s picks

BluWave simplifies creating and running orders at the bar. Instead of having to flag down the bartender, customers are able to order drinks at their table using the BluWave app on their phone. The app utilizes Clover’s REST API to create and update orders on Clover. Merchants receive the orders, and once the order is ready, they can notify the customer to come to the bar. Bluetooth beacons track where customers are, and the bartender can quickly hand them their order. Customers close out their tab on their smartphone or pay using a Clover device — say goodbye to long lines at the bar.

Tapay eliminates the headache of having to split the bill by enabling the customers to split it themselves. Instead of relying on the waiter to figure out how to split shared items and remember what everyone had, Tapay streamlines the process using a smartphone app. Customers choose which items they had and pay in the app. The app utilizes the Clover REST API to pull the line items of the orders, and payment is accepted using the Developer Pay API. Enjoy more time relaxing and less time worrying about splitting the bill.
