GAMESCOM 2017: OUR 7 HIGHLIGHTS
Have you missed this year’s Gamescom? Haven’t had the chance to attend or catch up with everything new? Don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for. So, let’s have a look at what the companies and exhibitors had in store this time:
1. Super Mario Odyssey
Unsurprisingly, Nintendo and their trademark game series are still attached to the hearts of many gamers. As such, Super Mario Odyssey, to be released on October 27 for the Nintendo Switch, was able to draw huge crowds of attendees of all ages. Super Mario Odyssey is said to take you back to the more open-world approach of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine and bring this traidion to the newest Nintendo console as well.
2. Battlefield 1: In the Name of the Tsar
More of an FPS-player? No problem, as EA is slowly releasing more and more content of their newest Battlefield 1 Add-On, “In the Name of the Tsar” to the public. This Gamescom saw demos of a new map, Tsaritsyn, on which a large amount of infantry and vehicles will hold close-combat and trench battles in a snowy, deserted town center. Bit this is not all, In the Name of the Tsar will also supply you with 5 other new maps, 11 new weapons, land- and air-vehicles, a new game mode and the Russian Army faction to play as. Na zdorovje!
3. Age of Empires IV Announcement
If you’ve expected that Microsoft’s “secret title” may be a new game in the successful Age of Empires series, there’s some good and some bad news for you: The good news is, you are correct. Microsoft announced Age of Empires IV for Windows 10. The bad news: Nothing more was officially revealed than the trailer above. Albeit beautifully made in a retro-style, no gameplay scenes were revealed so far and we don’t know a concrete release date, yet.
4. Anno 1800 Trailer
Another treat for RTS and building simulation fans: Ubisoft is going back to the roots and announced another historical game within the Anno-series, after dabbling in the fields of futuristic energy conflicts and moon bases. Experience the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century and build an advanced civilization in the common Anno-style. Create complex production and trading routes and interact with bot-factions and other players through diplomacy or war. Of course, the popular “Endless game mode” will not be missing in this installment, either! Unfortunately, Anno 1800 will not see the light of day until early 2018.
5. THQ Secret #1: BioMutant
Previously, THQ announced to reveal a “brand new post-apocalyptic kung fu-fable open world IP” on this year’s Gamescom. Then, BioMutant, showed up. What looks like Rocket Raccoon got lost in the Darksiders 1 universe is actually a rather complex action-RPG within a very funny and crazy setting. If you’re intrigued by the comical style and the gameplay that has been shown so far, definitely mark the spring of 2018 on your calendar for this one.
6. THQ Secret #2: Black Mirror
As promised, here’s THQ’s second secret title: Black Mirror. While the contents of the game are still as mysterious as the title and trailer, what can be said for sure is that this psychological horror game will challenge your fear and determination with a dark, immense atmosphere. If THQ is able to keep their promise will be revealed on the 28th November this year when Black Mirror will be released on all common Steam platforms, as well as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
7. Xbox One X
On the hardware side, we saw Microsoft revealing their new Xbox One X “Scorpion Edition”. The console will hit stores on the 7th November and can already be pre-ordered. Microsoft upgraded the graphics-hardware generously on this version and added much higher memory bandwidth and 4K-support. However, this also comes at a price: While being more powerful than Sony’s PlayStation 4, the Xbox One X is also expected to be sold at around 499,99 EUR, 100 Euros more than their competitior’s current console.
These were our personal favorites on this year’s Gamescom, but of course, there were many more titles shown at the convention. We’ll keep you posted about new releases and deals on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, as always! Got hyped by one or more of these titles?
