Today, the Cmd team celebrates a major milestone. It’s a landmark for us that we believe is also important to the future of the cybersecurity space.

We’re humbled and excited to announce our Series B funding round of $15 million USD led by GV (formerly Google Ventures), with participation from Expa, Amplify Partners and additional strategic investors — bringing Cmd’s total raise to $21.6 million. I’m also thrilled to welcome Karim Faris, general partner at GV, to our board of directors.

How it all started

Cmd was born out of Expa and matured as the brainchild of discussions between Milun Tesovic and me, based on shared frustrations we’d both experienced when attempting to gain visibility and control over user activity within Linux server environments. We searched through the available security vendors to help optimize security hygiene for enterprise teams in a frictionless way. Disappointed, we discovered most vendors on the market focused on detection of legacy attack methods or preventing specific zero-day attacks — missing critical tactics that adversaries often leverage: administrative and system account access.

Typically, attackers will try to enter a network undetected through the weakest line of defense within an environment. Today, for a lot of companies, that weak link is usually the access provided to administrators to manage fleets of systems — systems typically running Linux. From uncontrolled use of shared keys to unmanaged privileged access to a lack of insight into the activity happening on these servers — they’re flying blind when it comes to Linux security. We’re giving them a flashlight.

And, our “flashlight” is protecting major technology-first companies like Uber, Qubole, and Zenefits. We empower them to gain an intimate understanding of how users interact with their cloud-hosted servers, so they can detect and proactively prevent threats to their business.

Cmd is united in our mission to solve the “unsexy” sides of security — helping organizations log, understand, predict, and control user activity within their Linux environment.

Building our dream team

Supporting us in this mission is an incredibly talented global roster of information security professionals including John Flynn, CISO of Uber and former director of security at Facebook; Freddy Dezeure, former head of the CERT-EU; and Irwan Tjan, CISO of Nordstrom.

Our mission to change the way the world thinks of security is no small undertaking. Building and maintaining a game-changing security platform is only possible with a dream team in place; individuals who push us to consider problems from different perspectives and infuse the spirit of innovation into our day-to-day operations. I’m a firm believer that to build a truly innovative product, you need to hire curious individuals who are passionate about making the world a better place and we’ve done just that. Together, we tackle the challenge of removing friction from security practices, using a deeply human-centric approach.

What’s next for Cmd?

The completion of our Series B funding will allow us to continue developing new defensive capabilities to add to our core platform. And to do that, we’ll be growing substantially in the coming months and years. I encourage you to visit our job board and come join us if you’re passionate about our mission!

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far but we’re far from done. On behalf of Milun, myself and the entire team, thank you to every one of our customers, investors, advisors, and board members. We look forward to celebrating the next milestone with you all.
