Welcome to our first #MEET interview series, where we shine a spotlight on the vibrant voices that make up the dynamic academic landscape of CMKL University. In this edition, we embark on a journey to unravel the unique perspectives of our first-year scholars, each weaving a narrative that reflects their diverse experiences, aspirations, and insights.

In this first issue, we are thrilled to introduce Shine Min Kha as the spotlight of this online issue. His story exemplifies the essence of CMKL’s commitment to fostering talents, overcoming challenges, and nurturing personal growth. Through Shine’s eyes, we gain insights into the unique and inspiring aspects of our university that set the stage for an unforgettable academic adventure. Let’s go!

Q: Can you provide some background about yourself, including your academic and extracurricular achievements before entering CMKL University?

I began my academic journey in computer science at the University of Information Technology (UIT) and completed my first year. However, the global pandemic prompted me to take a hiatus and delve into my true interests. Striving to explore both business and technology, I engaged in various activities such as joining organizations, undertaking internships, and participating in real-world projects.

During my first year at UIT, I became part of AIESEC, an international organization, where I acquired valuable leadership and business-related skills. Simultaneously, I delved into the realm of data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to satisfy my growing interest in these fields. Recognizing my passion for AI, I decided to pursue further specialization in the field. This led me to discover the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Engineering program at CMKL University, where I eagerly enrolled to continue my academic journey and deepen my expertise in AI.

Q: What inspired you to pursue the Artificial Intelligence & Computer Engineering program at CMKL University?

I am fortunate to have stumbled upon this opportunity, as everything seemed to align perfectly. The global pandemic prompted me to take gap years, a decision that led me to explore new paths.

In my quest to specialize in AI, I scoured programs abroad, finding only a handful offering AI as a degree. The discovery of the Artificial Intelligence and Computer Engineering program at CMKL University filled me with joy. What intrigued me the most was not only the focus on AI itself but also the inclusion of business-related and entrepreneurship majors in the curriculum. The prospect of delving into various fascinating AI subjects convinced me that applying for this program was the right choice.

Q: How did your previous experiences contribute to your decision to enroll in the AI & Computer Engineering program?

As mentioned earlier, I pursued computer science for a year and a half at a different university, gaining valuable experience in programming and basic computer knowledge. Concurrently, I delved into AI through self-study, applying acquired skills to real-world projects during internships and volunteer work. Additionally, my diverse work experiences in tech and business, ranging from start-ups to corporations and international organizations, further motivated me to enroll in this major as a first-year university student.

*Q: What factors influenced your decision to choose CMKL University for your higher education?

The decisive factor in choosing to enroll in the AI major at CMKL University is the program itself, offering a diverse range of AI-related subjects. CMKL, akin to a startup in the education sector, stood out with its unique blend of AI subjects, alongside elements like entrepreneurship and soft skills, providing a well-rounded education. Despite the Bachelor program being relatively new, with no graduates yet, the challenge of being part of this innovative initiative appealed to me.

While I received acceptance and full scholarships from some well-regarded national universities in Thailand and abroad, I opted for CMKL due to its distinctive attributes in terms of atmosphere, curriculum, and the collaboration between Carnegie Mellon in the US and KMITL in Thailand. The main factor, however, is the university’s unwavering focus on AI.

Q: As a scholarship student, can you tell us about the scholarship and how it has impacted your university experience?

The scholarship is fully funded with a full tuition fee waiver and monthly stipends. The significant impact I have had is that I could follow my favorite subject with the support of the university.

Q: How has your experience been within the AI & Computer Engineering program at CMKL University?

Joining the program at CMKL brought a surprising work-like atmosphere, which resonated with my desire to transition seamlessly into a professional career after gaining a few years of work experience.

One standout feature of the program that I particularly appreciate is the self-paced learning approach. With minimal lecture hours, we are afforded ample time for self-study. The accessibility of professors during office hours and the availability of individual academic advisors further enhance the support system. The university employs a unique approach to skill assessment, replacing traditional exams with group work, presentations, individual reports, and interviews — mimicking a real-world company setting where tasks are assigned, and teamwork is paramount.

The university’s emphasis on creating a study-life balance is evident in the atmospheric setup. Classrooms occupy the sixth floor, while the fifth floor offers spaces for board games and indoor sports activities, providing students with opportunities to relax and unwind. In essence, CMKL offers a university experience that mirrors a professional work environment, allowing me to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Q: Can you share any projects or courses within the major that you found particularly engaging or challenging?

This is a good course on AI basics for beginners. It is not very interactive, but it gives a fun and easy experience with the fundamental AI.

Q: How would you describe the support you’ve received from the faculty within the AI & Computer Engineering program?

In each subject, there’s a dedicated teaching assistant (TA), and the support they provide during classes has proven to be one of the most valuable resources from the faculty. Additionally, every student has an academic advisor with whom discussions about academic life are encouraged. What strikes me the most is the sense of unity here; everyone, from students to staff and professors, feels like part of one big family.

Q: Since entering CMKL University, have there been any specific achievements or projects related to AI or computer engineering that you are proud of?

I’d like to highlight my ongoing research and development project as a significant aspect of my current academic journey. Although the project’s final completion is slated for the end of the year, our team has successfully tackled the challenging phases and achieved substantial progress in the preceding semester.

Q: How has your perspective or skill set evolved after joining CMKL University?

Upon enrolling in the program, I expanded my knowledge and skills in AI through the diverse array of AI-related subjects. Notably, my research skills have seen improvement, given that a significant portion of my academic tasks and assessments revolves around research. The working-like atmosphere at CMKL University has contributed to this, leaving me with a sense of professionalism in my learning environment.

Q: Is there a sense of community within the AI & Computer Engineering program at CMKL University?

I have lived amidst diversity, and I firmly believe that a sense of community is shaped by one’s attitude and efforts. Despite being an international student in a community with a relatively small number of fellow international students, I have never felt out of place. As the student population in the AiCE program is not huge, this helps create an indescribable sense of unity within the CMKL community.

Q: As you progress through your AI & Computer Engineering program, what are your aspirations for the future?

I plan to delve into all the subjects within the AI track during my bachelor’s degree program. Throughout this journey, I aim to enhance my skills and deepen my knowledge in the specific competencies I’ve chosen. Applying the insights gained from this program, I aspire to engage in internships and actively contribute to the community.

Q: How do you envision applying your education and experiences after graduation?

I’m confident that the skills and knowledge acquired through this program will prove invaluable in both my future career and my entrepreneurial goals after graduation.

*Q: If you were to recommend CMKL University and the AI & Computer Engineering program to prospective students, what would you highlight?

Everything mentioned above contributes to the unique aspects of the university. Noteworthy highlights include the distinctive work-like atmosphere coupled with self-paced learning. The assessment structure, emphasizing teamwork and individual reports, provides practical opportunities to apply real skills in real-life scenarios.

Moreover, the program stands out for offering a diverse range of AI subjects alongside other intriguing areas of study. If you’re seeking a university experience that readies you for the job market, combines a work-like atmosphere with an enjoyable campus life, and focuses on AI studies, I highly recommend considering this as the choice among the many options available.
