More charities pull out of Mar-a-Lago, solar eclipse 2017 arrives and more.

Two more charities are cancelling events at Mar-a-Lago.

  • The backlash continued to President Trump’s tepid response to white nationalism in Charlottesville, Virginia.
  • The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper were the latest groups to ditch Mar-a-Lago, the president’s private club in Palm Beach, Florida. Nine other organizations announced last week that they would pull out of events at the resort.
  • Cancellations could affect the president’s bottom line. Trump maintains a financial stake in Mar-a-Lago and reported $37.2 million in income from the club in his April financial disclosure.

🌘 A solar eclipse traveled across America for the first time since 1918.

  • Today’s big story waited nearly a century to happen. Millions of Americans took a break to watch the solar eclipse. Trump joined in — he and first lady Melania Trump watched from a White House balcony.
  • The eclipse began in Oregon at 1:15 p.m. EDT and moved east, ending in South Carolina at 4:09 p.m. EDT.
  • Businesses cashed in throughout the week on the once-in-a-generation event with eclipse-themed merchandise.
