Daily Rewind: Trump scolds NATO allies
President Trump once again criticized NATO leaders for not spending enough on defense. Here’s the lowdown:
- Trump said NATO nations “are still not paying what they should be paying.” He added: “This is not fair to the people and taxpayers of the United States.”
- The president made the statement during his first official meeting with the 27-member nation alliance in Brussels.
- According to a NATO guideline, Treaty members should aim to spend 2% of their economic output on defense. But there’s no penalty for not meeting this target. NATO doesn’t keep track of what members spend on defense.
- Trump criticized NATO during his campaign but had recently changed his tune. In February, Trump said NATO was “no longer obsolete” and that money was “pouring in” thanks to his intervention.
