In my last posting, Decomposing a Vision, I discussed Commitment-Based Project Management (CBPM), an approach to planning and executing projects and programs derived from Intel’s semiconductor design planning and execution. The history and the approach, as used at Intel, are described in Timm Esque’s excellent No Surprises Project Management. You can find it in Amazon and other vendors.

Map Days are the group planning sessions used in CBPM to generate the initial and, if needed, subsequent plans.

Today I’ll talk about the planning process and some of the details behind it. I’ll use the word “projects” but the same approach works very well for “programs” as defined by PMI.

Before you can organize the planning, though, you need to address some preparatory work:

  • Is the vision clear and the goals defined and agreed to?
  • Do you have the funding?
  • Do you have the team or teams identified and are they available?
  • Are all groups needed for the project involved?
  • Do you have a person able to run your Map Day (group planning session)?
