Three Lessons I Learnt from A Caterpillar

While I was walking today in Colombia’s countryside, one of those Sunday walks on a Monday, I saw this caterpillar hanging down and touched it. This is what I learnt from its behavior:

  1. Your life is a hanging, thin, silky string whose end can be abrupt.
  2. Whether you’re successful or not, if you don’t move in life you will slightly move down — by default. So not moving in any way is not a valid path at all. This also includes to make decisions.
  3. The further you are down on your string, the more effort it takes to climb your way up again — even to a level that is not extraordinary or outstanding, just regular.

However, you are not alone in this world, and you can’t do everything by yourself. That is why you have people who care about you or get impulses that give you that external push to make you move. That’s perfectly ok.

The caterpillar moved up on his own thin string when I touched it as well. The way it moved was elegant and powerful. It twisted its “head area” and let the body follow. Watching that I saw willingness, struggle and power at the same time, in a such a small animal.

Watch out for other details in the world. There are hidden lessons, and reminders for yourself — always. And don’t just hang around or on your silky, thinny string.

Lacking imagination?

Here’s a video showing a caterpillar in Costa Rica. There’s a second video I found that shows it moving a bit more.

So it looked like what you see in the video, and it’s magical.
