Joy and Resilience In These Five States
MIRACLE TWINS, DOG RACING, SPACE PHOTOS, PET REUNIONS, AND LIBRARY JOY

ALABAMA
Living in a “duplex” for nine months, twin sisters Roxi and Rebel gave their mom Kelsey a one-in-a-million lottery experience. The lucky mother of two became a mother of four on December 19 and 20. Because Kelsie has two wombs, the fraternal twins did not have to share living quarters in útero, or should we say úteri? Congratulations, Kelsey! Welcome to your new home, Roxi and Rebel!
ALASKA
Last week, Emily Robinson and her team of Alaskan Huskies “out-mushed” 2022 Iditarod champion Brent Sass, a seasoned musher more than twice her age. Were she 18 instead of sweet 16, the 200-mile race would stand as a qualifying race for the Iditarod. Besides Alaskan adventures and her dogs, Robinson swims and plays “old-time fiddle.”
ARIZONA
Researchers from the University of Arizona are excited about the new moon shots they’re seeing this month. Apparently, the volcanic activity on Io, Jupiter’s third-largest moon, makes getting great photos difficult. That, and the fact that NASA’s JunoCam is not in the neighborhood every day, makes these photos extra valuable. The last close-up pictures of this moon were taken in 2001. The new images reveal a lava flow hundreds of miles long, mountains, and even a plume from Io’s volcano, Prometheus.
Cool!
In honor of Prometheus, however, the better word here is Fire!
ARKANSAS
Alaska has its huskies, and now, Habooki Shepmann of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, has her Disco. The 12-year-old dog, after whom Shepmann has named her food truck, went missing in late December while Shepman was out of town. After exhausting her search in her home community, Shepmann used fliers and Facebook, and eventually, the Edgecombe County Animal Shelter the pup. About a week after Disco’s cross-country adventure, she was found 1,000 miles from home at the Sara Lee Frozen Bakery in Tarboro, NC. If “making life’s moments a little sweeter” is Sara Lee’s purpose, the iconic brand of the Midwest is off to a great start in 2024!
CALIFORNIA
Jeopardy Question: Eureka! I have found it!
Jeopardy Answer: What are five words California’s Mychal Threets wants everyone to say about their library cards?
This month, the 33-year-old librarian’s enthusiasm, some would say evangelism for the fantastic (and free) benefits of being a library card holder went viral and earned him spots in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and elsewhere across the Internet. Besides reaching hundreds of thousands with his pro-library, pro-reading, and pro-joy message, he has the best library card tattoo ever!
