Mars Society Brazil is the newest institutional partner of the COBRUF Association in the promotion of 2019 COBRUF Aerospace Competitions. The partnership is an important step towards the advancement of applied research in space suits and space stations in Brazil.

The Mars Society is one of the largest organizations in the world in defense of the human exploration and colonization of Mars. This renowned international organization is responsible for several studies on the red planet. Among these studies are the Mars Analogs: research stations for practical simulations of habitations on Mars, where human behavior is studied in a confined environment under conditions analogous to those of future astronauts on Mars missions.

Its Brazilian side, Mars Society Brazil, is responsible for Habitat Marte, located about 100 km from Natal-RN, which is already in its 12th edition. In addition to Brazil, only the US, Russia, China, Israel, France, Italy, Canada and Australia have Mars Analogs.

“The partnership between Mars Society Brazil and the COBRUF Association is the result of mutual admiration. Mars Society Brazil believes that both initiatives are committed to increasing the interest of young people and children in space. Both initiatives contribute to the construction of competences in the space area, a strategic aspect for the advanced training of human resources aimed at a new space economy in Brazil “, says Dr. Julio Rezende, Mars Society Brazil coordinator and professor at Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte.

The COBRUF Aerospace Competitions (CACs) are the most ambitious ecosystem of space exploration educational competitions and aim to democratize the access of students from Brazil and the world to peaceful space exploration and the Right to Fly Higher. The competition ecosystem receives teams in the areas of experimental sounding rockets, planetary space suits, deep space cubesats, rovers and drones for Mars exploration and AUVs for Ocean Worlds exploration.

Through the partnership, Mars Society Brazil will provide a judge with hands-on experience in Habitat Mars simulations for the COBRUF’s unique experimental space suits competition. In addition, the institutions will try to enable logistics so that attendees of the COBRUF Aerospace Competitions can visit and get a closer look at the Habitat Mars facilities, with possible (non-evaluative) tests of the teams’ own space suits in the structure, if they wish. It is expected that the technological advances made by the teams will contribute to the research of Mars Analogs in Brazil and in the world.

“The COBRUF Association and the Mars Society Brazil are pioneers in Brazil in studies of human exploration and colonization of Mars. Through this partnership, we take another important step in strengthening and integrating research and development of technologies that can be useful for applications in medicine and agriculture on Earth, as well as manned missions to the red planet.“, says Emersson Nascimento, CEO of COBRUF Association.

Team registrations for the COBRUF Aerospace Competitions, including the space suits competition, are open. Interested parties can register via https://aerospacecompetitions2019.eventbrite.com.br.
