Meet Cochl’s Team: Alexandre Fournier, Data Engineer
Q. Could you briefly introduce yourself, please?
Hello, my name is Alex, and I am 23 years old. I work as a data engineer on Cochl’s data team. I previously completed a six-month internship with Cochl, during which I primarily focused on mobile development. I majored in AI, computer & data science at UTC in France. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my friends, exploring new bars, listening to music, and going for runs.
Q. Why did you choose to become a data engineer? Did anything influence your decision to pursue this field?
My fascination with computer science drew me to pursue a career in this field. I find it incredibly versatile and powerful, allowing people to accomplish almost anything using code. The vast potential of this domain is what motivated me to specialize in it.
While I once had aspirations of becoming a football player, my realization of the vast possibilities offered by computer science and AI ultimately led me to choose this path.
Q. What are your specific responsibilities on Cochl’s data team?
My role is quite varied. Recently, I have been primarily focused on CODI, our data platform. I’m working closely with Youngin, who has been the sole project manager for this system for quite some time. My main focus is to add new features that will help our team members use CODI more effectively. Additionally, I help with data labeling and collection process. I’m also collaborating with Hubert from the research team on REST API pipeline development. I’m always willing to help other team members when they need my assistance.
Q. As you mentioned, you originally joined Cochl as a mobile developer during a six-month internship. What led you to switch to your current role as a data engineer?
After completing my internship, a new mobile developer named Quentin joined the team. As I was eager to stay with Cochl, I approached other team members to explore any opportunities where I could contribute.
Fortunately, I had a background in both AI, computer & data science, which led me to the chance to start as a data engineer. I’m very pleased with my current role, as it provides a more comprehensive understanding of the various components that make up a project, enabling me to collaborate more effectively with other team members.
Q. What led you to join Cochl?
I was required to complete a six-month internship abroad to graduate from my university. Having had a positive experience in Korea previously, I decided to come back to this country. I searched for startups and applied to a few, and after several interviews, I ultimately choose to join. The fact that there were already French employees at the company made it easier for me to integrate into the team.
I was drawn to the company’s unique approach to work. Cochl allows for a lot of freedom in terms of how you approach your work, and the communication style is very horizontal. This creates an environment where anyone can suggest ideas without hesitation, which I found very appealing. Most Korean startups and companies are quite traditional, but Cochl is different; you have the freedom to do what you want here.
Q. What are your goals for this year?
My primary goal is to become more involved in AI-related projects. That’s why I’m currently working on research projects with the research team to develop models and expand my knowledge of AI. Additionally, I want to continue supporting the data team in any way I can, as it remains a fundamental part of my role.
Q. Why do you think ‘AI’ is so attractive?
To me, AI represents the future. Before AI, there were certain tasks that machines simply couldn’t do, or could only do with great difficulty. However, AI is constantly developing and finding new solutions. What’s even more exciting is its potential for expansion. Services like ChatGPT or other generative AI are just the beginning; there’s no telling what AI will be capable of in the future. Moreover, the impact of AI in the real world is simply amazing. When I code something that can exist in the real world, that’s when I feel the real magic of AI.
Q. How was your experience of onboarding at Cochl when you first join the company?
It was a good experience. Since I had already completed an internship at Cochl, I was familiar with the onboarding process, which made it easier for me to get accustomed to the company. However, since I was joining a new team, I needed to learn about how the data team operates and their data structures. Youngin and Ilyoung provided me with a lot of information, and I asked them numerous questions which they kindly answered.
Q. If a new member joined the data team, what advice would you give them to succeed at Cochl?
It’s possible that new members may feel disoriented because the company operates differently from typical companies. There are no specific instructions from a team leader, and individuals must figure out what they need to do. So, I would give newcomers a brief overview of how we work at Cochl.
Q. How would you describe your work style?
My work style varies depending on the workload. Sometimes, I strictly follow the 9-to-6 schedule, and other times, I am more flexible with my hours. I tended to work on tasks that come to mind rather than following a pre-planned schedule. However, I realized the importance of planning as it helps prioritize tasks. Our data team uses Trello and Gather town for project and team management, which has helped increase our productivity and communication.
Q. What was your most memorable event at Cochl?
On my first day, the team members were already drunk when I arrived late at a bar gathering. Although it may not be the most appropriate story, it was memorable because I felt like I would fall in love with the company and the team members; and it was very easy to create bonds very quickly with my new colleagues.
Q. What kind of people would be interested in joining Cochl?
Cochl would be a great fit for people who enjoy working independently and autonomously, who are not afraid to share their ideas and opinions, and who do not like receiving orders without any room for input.
Q. One last word you want to say to readers?
Thanks for your interest! We want to achieve great things at Cochl and I hope you can feel our determination and commitment :)
