WHAT IS BEHIND THE EVOLUTION FLOW

The Evolution Flow is the very core of how we work with the evolution of human systems at Cocoon Pro. In the previous article we have seen what it is and why it works. Let’s now see what is behind it, what are its roots and how they catalyze the work and experiences of many people across decades.

We have learnt from giants ranging from Kurt Lewin to Donella Meadows, through Eric Trist, Gregory Bateson, Paul Tolchinsky, and many others that have been facing the complex and beautiful issue of dealing with the evolution of human systems. In the meanwhile, we have practiced first hand, over and over again, in real-word evolutionary journeys of organizations of any size and kind. Therefore, today the Evolution Flow integrates in a coherent framework entire systems of thought like Socio-Technical Systems Theory, Lean Thinking, Complex Adaptive Systems theory, and more.

In a nutshell, the Evolution Flow is based on a few original conceptual frameworks of what a human system is and how it evolves towards expressing its full potential. The first one is what we call the River Model, and it reflects the Complex Adaptive System nature of a human system together with its Socio-Technical nature.

the River Model

The River Model shows that a human system flows in continuous change, and that the speeds of change of its different “layers” are not the same. Positively influencing its course, without just creating turbulence, implies knowing and respecting this fact. By carefully introducing habits that iteratively evolve the whole system, the interdependence of these layers can be leveraged into the nurturing of three types of evolution that can happen in harmony with each other: operational evolution, behavioral evolution, psychological or epistemological evolution.

Another important framework within the Evolution Flow is the concept of the Evolution Space, the hodological space in which an organization evolves how people express their full adaptive and creative potential in collaborating, conversing and cocreating, thus tracing a journey over the three dimensions of Leaness, Openness and Inclusiveness.

Breathing the uniqueness of each organization’s identity, context and trajectory in this journey, allows to find out where it lies today in this space, and where an evolutionary tension is pulling it towards for the near future. Moreover, the Evolution Space allows to understand each organization’s evolutionary journey so to open up to the development of three key attributes of how it exists in its ecosystem: resilience, relevance and resonance. Ultimately, the Evolution Flow is our way of working with the beauty of this journey.
