HOW THE EVOLUTION FLOW PRACTICE LOOKS LIKE

The Evolution Flow is the very core of how we work with the evolution of human systems at Cocoon Pro. After having seen in the previous articles what it is and which roots support it, let’s now explore how it works in practice.

At the side of the River Model and the Evolution Space lies a third vital part of the Evolution Flow: its framework of practice. Applying the Evolution Flow in the real world is an iterative journey, and it is based on the careful repetition of three steps. First, disturbing the human system, introducing something that calls for an adaptation of the system. Second, discovering how the system digests it, how it reacts in the whole of its depth. Third, directing the energy that this variation generates towards the desired evolution, also building momentum for the next iteration.

This iterative work of disturbing, discovering and directing, needs having the people of the system as core part of itself. They are the ones bringing the unique wisdom of the system and, contrary to usual “consultancy”, the Evolution Flow does not presume to bring a valid answer from outside of the system itself. Instead, it enables the system to express, understand and mobilize itself. In order to achieve this, it leverages on decades of Whole Scale Change practice by using the concept of the microcosm. In other words, we take care of engaging enough different people to represent the main diversity dimension of the whole system, in every iteration and at any scale.

The Evolution Flow practice, therefore, takes effort of the very organization that wants to evolve through it. In fact, without that effort no real and sustained evolution ever occurs. For this reason, before even beginning, we make sure that the kind of change for which the Evolution Flow is called in, is deemed very important, it is considered core by the system or subsystem that wants to make it.

The evolutionary journey of a human, socio-technical system is a continuous flow, whose speed and phases are emergent and cannot be known upfront. It is dangerous to call it a “transformation”, as it is often heard, because that implies that there is a “B-state” that marks its end, while that is never the case. Having experience, mastering the Evolution Flow, allows to foresee the magnitude of the evolutionary phase an organization wants to navigate, thus estimating the time and effort it is going to take. But anyone selling an exact plan of what is going to happen and how long it is going to take, would be lying.

In the Evolution Flow framework of practice, habits have a crucial importance. In fact, introducing habits as a “disturbance” allows for the whole system to have the time to digest and react to the variation, down to its deepest layers of culture and people. Habits stay with the system day in and day out and, if properly chosen and proposed, they are able to evolve the full flow of the system, generating a coherent evolution that stays, that nobody can take away from the system anymore. The Evolution Flow is our way of dancing with the beauty of this challenge.
