“Exceptionally Dull Weirdos”

What the Telegraph thinks of programmers

The Telegraph today posted an article about the UK Government’s plans to reform Computing teaching in schools.

The Telegraph takes the view that it’s “a stupid idea”, and that’s a fair viewpoint to take. The future of business and commerce will no doubt be electronic, but just like today, the key skill young people need is to use electronic tools, not necessarily to built them.

A Telegraph article describing programmers as “exceptionally dull weirdo(s)”

But the Telegraph doesn’t stop there, they’ve decided instead to perpetuate derogatory stereotypes about programmers.

In the first fews paragraph we get described like so;

Jack is the perfect poster child for why our kids can’t code — he’s a normal person, rather than an exceptionally dull weirdo, like the bulk of developers.

…if you leave the tech genius on his own he’ll start muttering to himself.

Perhaps this is unsurprising. Programmers have been sidelined, made fun of, and disempowered for a very long time.

But things have changed, and programmers are some of the most self-confident, interesting and outgoing people I know.

Shame on you The Telegraph!
