Getting started with Code Club
Every month in 2020 we’ll have a brand new theme that we’ll share across our platforms. There’ll be social media chats, blog articles and learning resources across all our channels. Stay tuned to our blog for updates on topics and discussions.
It’s February (can you believe it!), and this month we’re focused on getting started with Code Club; including getting started with coding, building your club and suggestions on what to do at every step of the process.
The end of the month will culminate with the release of our brand new website! Especially designed to make getting started easier! We can’t wait to show you!
Hmmm, volunteering?
So, you think you might want to volunteer at a Code Club in your community. You might not know anything about coding, maybe your kids are pumped to start and no one else has put up their hand? Maybe you’re a teacher getting ready to teach the Digital Technologies curriculum? Maybe your workplace has volunteer leave available and you want to do something that has lasting impact, lets you spend time with your family and uses your skills?
There’s so many pathways that our volunteers take to get to this point. Each one is unique, and every single one of them is awesome!! What’s stopping you?
I don’t know anything about coding?
Don’t worry at all! A lot of our volunteers don’t know anything about coding when they start, but it’s easy! We’ve got training that you do ahead of time, a heap of resources that you can use and a community of awesome people that can help with any questions you might have.
And most importantly, you don’t have to be an expert! Learning alongside the kids is incredibly inspiring for them — you can celebrate new skills and new adventures, as well as work together to solve problems. Plus, kids LOVE helping their teachers to learn new skills.
Code Club is all about giving everyone the opportunity to learn — and that includes YOU!
How do I make it work with my schedule?
Typically, most clubs will run after school and during the week. But not always. There are clubs that run on weekends, and before school, or maybe even during your lunch break!
Some of our corporate volunteers will come into work an hour early, so they can leave an hour early. Others will work from home on days when they’re running their club.
The important thing is to be realistic. What can you commit to? Do you have an hour a week that you can fit in? And the time to prepare as well?
When you’re getting started, make sure you check with your local club. Don’t assume that they can’t fit you in! They probably have a wait list a mile long for kids to join their club and would be THRILLED to have you, at whatever time you can!
Can’t someone else do it?
Sure! Anyone can volunteer! But remember that we only have clubs because we have volunteers. We want as many people as possible to learn digital skills, including adults! So, why not have a go? We promise it’s fun, and not too hard!!
