Hour of Code 2022
Each year the Hour of Code is a worldwide event, run by Code.org, to celebrate and increase participation in computer science. Anyone can take part by completing a 1-hour coding activity between December 5th and 11th.
The Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies provides a platform for every student in Australia to engage with computer science. The ICT General Capabilities provides opportunities across every curriculum area to engage with digital tools to demonstrate and deepen learning. The Hour of Code highlights the importance and value that we need to place on computer science and computational thinking, in a fun and engaging way.
This year the theme for Hour of Code is Explore, Play, Create. To help our clubs take part in Hour of Code we can confidently say that every single one of our projects is suited to the theme. So, we thought we could share our favourites from the 154 projects that are currently on our website.
Our project suggestions
This project is our newest addition to the website and has been designed by Code Club Australia as a taster project for our Code of Origin Challenge in 2023. This project is based on the classic pong game and sees New South Wales go up against Queensland in the State of Origin football game.
Learn how to program a character that can talk like you! This project is best for kids who have some experience with coding. Explore the sample project and then have your coders create a theme for their own chat bot.
This project seems to remain a favourite across the years, and why wouldn’t it? Everyone loves music and this project sees its user clicking on the screen to make their own music. This scratch project uses the music extension to import coding blocks to play music. Rock on!
Code a game where the shark needs to eat the fish, not the plastic rubbish floating in the ocean. This game was one of the favourites of Code Club Australia in 2021 and is still one of the most accessed projects in 2022. This game is a great basis for kids to explore before creating their own themed version.
We have created a certificate to present to all of your coders who take part in Hour of Code this year.
What a fun way to finish our year!
Happy coding!
Kaye North, Code Club Australia.
