Looking into Space — meet the winner!
Meet Sara. The Looking into Space project was part of our Moonhack competition in 2023, and Sara created the winning entry.
Sara started coding in 2023, the same year that she was a Moonhack winner! Sara became interested in coding when she saw an animation and game on Scratch, and then finding it was something called coding and that she could do it, started her on a journey.
Sara’s teacher, Ms Ng told her about the Moonhack competition. Sara described the Looking into Space project as, “a cute little game where you’re able to zoom around space, finding little stars, planets, and comets — it’s something pretty tempting.” Sara’s game was a remix of the original Looking into Space project, however she created a whole new theme for the game with backdrops, characters, sprites, and purpose.
The judges of this category picked this project as the winner because of it was very well-thought-out, and the great use of broadcasts to coordinate the sprites. They also commented on the smooth running of the program and made special mention of the screen where players could access the rules of the game, or jump straight into playing, after the introduction.
Sara mentioned that she faced some challenges while creating her project. Her biggest decision was about what she was going to make! She liked the idea of a clicker-style game mixed with the Looking into Space project, so she continued to ‘fiddle’ with the code until she created what she wanted.
Sara’s next coding adventure is going to be this year’s Moonhack. Will you be joining her?
