On March 3–4, 2018, Code for Atlanta partnered with Park Pride on the Atlanta Greenspace Hackathon, allowing 8 government and organizational partners to pitch their ideas to around 80 participant technologists, designers, and anyone else who was interested in being involved.

Below are summaries of the prototypes that the groups put together over the weekend. You can watch the full prototype presentations at our Facebook page.

“Future Greenspaces”

The Future Greenspaces group worked with the City of Atlanta Office of Resilience to find optimal placements for future parks in the City of Atlanta. In the included map, the blue dots represent the best locations for future parks based on population density and a goal of everyone being within walking distance of a park.

“Park Finder”

The Park Finder group worked with Park Pride and the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation to develop a web-based mobile app that allows users to find parks by filtering by their characteristics. Their back-end code is available at https://github.com/jrrickerson/parkfinder-backend

“Bird Nerds”

The “Bird Nerds” group worked with Atlanta Audubon Society to develop an educational website about bird-building collisions. They have a demo live at http://atlsavesbirds.joysutton.com/

AWARE Wildlife Center

One group worked with AWARE Wildlife Center to design a mobile-first app to help people know what to do if they find an injured animal.

Piedmont Park Conservancy

One group worked with Piedmont Park Conservancy to prototype ideas for a tour guide app based on the Piedmont Park history walking tour, including considering an augmented reality option. Their app is live at http://piedmont-park-tour.herokuapp.com/

EarthShare

Two groups worked with EarthShare of Georgia. Both teams were looking to improve EarthShare’s “green jobs” page by making it easier for administrators to use and easier for users to find jobs.

One was a team of General Assembly students. They prototyped out a full redesign of the jobs site. Their prototype is live at https://earthshare-project.herokuapp.com/

The other team analyzed their partner’s needs and found a Wordpress plugin that filled them. They fully implemented a solution on EarthShare’s website at http://www.earthsharega.org/green-jobs/

Arabia Alliance

This team prototyped an iOS app that would serve as a concierge for new (and returning) visitors to Arabia Mountain.

“Smart Parks”

This team used machine learning and Google’s Dialogflow to allow users to ask questions about Georgia Parks.

This project is live at https://data.georgia.org/parks/

What’s Next?

The teams are welcome to stay in touch with their government and organization partners to continue working on their projects either at Code for Atlanta’s hack nights, or on their own time.

Thanks to everyone who made the hackathon a success, and congrats to all the groups on a job well done 🎉 The prototypes and presentations were excellent. We loved seeing what y’all came up with and can’t wait to see what comes next!
