~ EXPANDING NATIONWIDE THROUGH OPEN SOURCE~

Code for Japan (Founder and director: Haruyuki Seki), a general incorporated association which helps local governments and communities throughout Japan address their issues through Information Technology (IT), was commissioned to develop the official site for Tokyo Metropolitan’s novel coronavirus countermeasures.

Since the public launch of the site on March 3rd, it has had over 1 million views per day, helping disseminate information to many people.

The source code of the site, which displays the latest information and trends of infections in Tokyo Metropolitan areas, has been made available as open source.

TOKYO METROPOLITAN’S NOVEL CORONAVIRUS COUNTERMEASURES SITE

User-Friendly Design

The latest information related to the coronavirus outbreak inside Tokyo Metropolitan areas is presented simply and effectively, such as through the use of graphs, making it easier for people to understand. Furthermore, users are easily able to find the information they are looking for since the consultation desk and relevant information isare clearly defined for each case.

Open Data, Open Source

Tokyo MetropolitanMetroplitan has released the data such as the ones used in the graphs publicly via Open Data, allowing anyone to utilize it.

Furthermore, the source code used in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s website is now available as open -source to the public to be used freely (※1). This can be used for creating coronavirus countermeasure websites beyond just for Tokyo, with approximately 30 organizations such as local governments in Hokkaido Prefecture, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Taiwan already creating their sites based on the source code (※2).

Open to Suggestions

To provide a user-friendly site with accurate information related to the novel coronavirus, there was support provided by over 100 volunteers, including IT professionals, designers, and researchers.

Also, with the cooperation from local governments and IT communities, the setting up of different versions of this website within days has been made possible.

Message from Mr. Seki, the founder and directorRepresentative Director of Code for Japan

This website created by Tokyo Metropolitan was set up in a way so that there would not be great effort required from local governments and developers. As infrastructure costs have been minimized, large effort should not be required for future maintenance as well.

As for Code for Japan, not only are we cooperating with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and sharing accurate data on the coronavirus, we have also opened the source code and are cooperating with different local governments to make it an even better system to be used nationwide. We sincerely hope the source code and data can be used effectively by both public and private sectors.
