How we ended up with a wine startup

Many of you know Czech Republic for its beer culture. We are worldwide known for our pilsner lager especially. But we have also a pretty decent wine industry in a part of the country called Moravia, which is constantly growing in last 10 years.
And here is the story how we, two IT guys, are just about to release a new wine startup Vinito.cz.

During my carrier of programmer I have met already dozen of colleagues, but some of them are accompanying me for a long time. With my colleague Pavel (btw. he was one of three guys who encouraged me to start to write a code and did first steps with me — it’s now more than 10 years ago. Thank you Pavel!) we were working on a project with Google PPC Ads. And we had an idea to simplify the process of creating a campaign for small entrepreneurs. We wanted to start our own business and this seemed as a good idea. Few months later Google came up with its Google AdWords Express and we were screwed.

We never gave up the idea of own business, we just didn’t have an idea we would believe. It took some time, but once we had a beers talks (haha!) and Pavel said:

Let’s join two things we do like — programming and wine.

Our idea is to present each month two independent wine growers to the broad audience of people.

Pavel was born and grew up just in the middle of vineyards and I lived not far from there for a 5 years. So we had contacts to the right people from the wine business and together we had more than 30 years of experiences in programming. We were good to go.

The choice of the stack was easy — as every startup we need to go live fast, so we have chosen Ruby on Rails with a thoroughly edited template.

That’s it one could say, but it is never just like that. As programmers used to build middle-to-large architecture systems on .NET it could not be just View-Model-Controllers. We have build a little bit more robust architecture around (nothing world-shaking though) which we will introduce in next few posts.

We are just two months before going live with our big thing we believe will change the wine culture in Czech Republic.
Please keep your fingers crossed for us!
