As someone who joined an IT degree on a whim, the whole concept of programming was quite vague to me. I was overwhelmed by people’s ability to use random characters and make a whole new application with it. Honestly, I never thought I could be someone doing the same stuff and joining the league of being a programmer in my life. But as time passed, I was introduced to programming language in my class and it shattered the perspective I had on programming and piqued my interest to a whole new level.

However, this newfound passion was not served with the slow-paced academic structure. I wanted to understand the depth of programming. I wanted to write a sophistic code by constructing my inner logic and build an application. Then, I started taking online tips and tricks to explore more, but I felt inadequate. I knew I needed first handed guidance from the mentor to make my basic strong. As I was exploring, I found out about Code Like Her Fellowship, and after being selected as one of the fellows, it boosted my morale further.

The course has rendered me into a brand new person, I feel I am quite versatile. I got an opportunity to sharpen my skills as a programmer, I was introduced to the world of designing with HTML and CSS. The mentors were completely aware of our individual goals and so they walked side by side with us as we walked through HTML CSS, Javascript React-redux. This session helped us through new topics like DOM, JSX and created a Beer Bank. The teaching manner was very subtle, even though we were being introduced to the basics they gave us a wide understanding of how strong basics can be used as a sophisticated trick to write complex applications.

Soon after the React class was over, we started off with the Backend application using Node JS. Like before, we started with the basics before diving onto the main concepts. On Backend, we learned about Express and Postgres. The introduction of express framework added a new level of complexity in the beginning, that’s when I realized I am learning an industry-driven course and I am slowly chasing the life of a professional programmer. We ended the week by performing the CRUD Operation.

Our mentors had a clear idea of the things they wanted us to engage in. Their various techniques of shortcuts and industry-focused curriculum has shaped us to become more confident and get hands-on experience on both frontend and backend programming. I am truly thankful and grateful to the Fellowship as well as the mentors for helping me cement myself as a future professional. This has been a true testament to my skill.
