Using a website’s visual language to communicate a business’s message.

We are all familiar with communicating verbally using language and the nuances of doing so effectively, but what about visual language? Visual language includes all the elements that users see on the screen (ex., color, text, photo, logo, etc.) Our client, Tewanna, takes a holistic approach to business consulting. Our goal was to capture the essence and the spirit of her business. To do so, we had to clarify the client’s business message and craft her website’s visual language to capture the essence of that message.

We took our time asking Tewanna questions and ensuring that we understood her business and who Tewanna is as a person because a company is a reflection of its owner. We used mood boards to develop a common ground for visual aesthetics and made efforts to gain a deep understanding of Tewanna’s mission as a business owner. Using what we learned as a strong foundation, we could craft her website’s visual language.

We wanted to capture her not only as a professional in the field but also show the care she puts into what she does. — CW’s designer, Jules

Color

We wanted to use colors to create a look and feel that matched the tone of Tewanna’s business practice: efficient and vibrant while also calming and peaceful. We found this balanced dichotomy in a soft red color. The soft red on the website brought vibrancy, but its essence also brought out the peace we wanted to include.

Text

We added the statement “A holistic approach to business consulting” at the top of her site because we wanted to convey Tewanna’s holistic approach and that she takes on the whole person. Tewanna’s message comes through clearly when you talk to her, and we wanted it to go through just as clearly on her site.

A completed website.

We delivered a completed site to Tewanna that she can now use to market and promote her business with clear messaging using clear visual language. This project works because it’s honest. Tewanna’s site reflects who she is and what her business is.

Tewanna told us that the team far exceeded her expectations. She thanked Jules, the company’s lead designer, for pulling out her unique personality.

I am so appreciative of Code Works to even think about business owners in South Bend. Having that opportunity is huge. To have others who love doing this share that blessing with others and for the City to get behind them is great.
