Another Week goes by quickly, and i needed to work on Open Data more. Following our lecturers advice on working on something we are passionate about, i decided not to do opal.

I always had a fascination with astrophysics since yr12, and luckily i managed to find a large dataset of the stars in space.

This data was very large (called hyg data) containing over 10000 identified stars. And each star containing data about its name, location, spectral id, temperature, magnitudes etc etc.

The open data project was quite scary for me as i was still lost with all this coding, especially after I found out we had to use ‘jupyter notebook’ which had a small difference in coding style from python ( or relative to what i knew about python).

I learnt a bit about creating graphs and charts from Ben’s tutorial, but other from that i was still limited in knowledge on how to create better graphs.

From yr12 Astrophysics, i knew about

  • calculating distances based of magnitudes
  • what the difference in luminosities can infer
  • Star behaviors
  • Chemical and core fuel burn identification
  • star categorizing
  • and other cool facts
