With the design of the new form i wanted to break away from the past iterations that were criticised to being too similar. I decided to break away from the the tunnel form and design something a bit more no linear. I had to keep in mind the form had to;

  • Accomodate all the other groups works
  • Fit with in pre determined design directions (the use of fabric to create a soft structure to contrast between a rough structure.)
  • Stay more inline with the design briefs sizing recommendations
  • Accommodate flow and the journey of the pavilion

. Above is the first rough design i tried . Using kangaroo i created two expanding structures. One with three anchor points and one with 4. Running the simulations allows the mesh’s to expand with real gravity forces, A good indication if these will be able to be build-able.

The basic concept behind this design is that there are two sides to the pavilion. One side would be rough and panelised while the other would be smooth and covered with fabric. One anchor point of the four anchor point structure is set in the middle of the pavilion area acting as a center column. In a sense it would dictate the flow of people as it breaks up the space in that people now have to travel around the pavilion in a circular direction.

This circular flow will allow people to drift to each different aspect of the pavilion (IOT to AR to VR.) organically as they explore the pavilion.

Exterior of the surface can be calibrated to support the need of the other groups i.e, perforated panels to control light for comfortable AR experience. Fabric can be utilised by IOTs group for their breathing installation. The structure is also quite spacious to allow for VR use.

FEEDBACK

After showing Alessandra The initial concept she pointed out some things to consider before proceeding with the idea.

Alessandra said to really focus on the flow of the structure. focus on where we want people coming in and leaving ( wanting to bring people form the main walkway ). Take careful care of where its placed especially in the vicinity of the trees , Do they react with it at all?.

Her other main point was the use of the space. How are we utilising the use of closed and open space? are the spaces interesting to be in?. This iteration is a bit to loose in how it contains space.

Her last bit of feedback was to create curiosity points . How to entice people to enter the pavilion. Do we create windows so people can see the AR and VR stuff and want to try it themselves.

Building off these points i designed a second iteration.

What i tried to do with this prototype was close up the space but also create a open air relaxation area. Its walls are made up from either side of the sails and it is situated the end of the pavilion outside of the enclosed spaces. This space was dedicated to Iot to set up their breathing prototype.

The more enclosed spaces where to allow for a more secular experience for the VR and AR respectively
