This morning, Kingsley and I discuss with our tutor on the pavilion design that Catherine and Emily made. When out tutor looked into their design, she was very interested and think we could go on with their design. However, there are a few points in which she wanted us to consider.

Alessandra’s explanation

Initially, Catherine and Emily were thinking of not making a subtracting parts of the grid structure where the fabric did not fill. However, our tutor think that we shouldn’t subtract them as there might be structural reasons as to why the precedent, transparent shell by PONE architecture made it that way. And she also mentioned how we should do some more form finding for the design and also make some structural analysis and optimization through galapagos.

From this discussion, we were able to think of what we will be able to present on Monday.

Workflow plan

After discussing, we were able to identify what we were able to get a more solid idea on what to focus on for our experimentation. For the people who are responsible for designing the joints, we are suppose to think of primary joints which is supposed to connect the structure and the fabric. Another joint that we have to think about is the secondary joints which will connect the structure to each other.

As for the fabric, what I will need to be exploring is the properties of different types of fabric and find the most suitable one for this type of design. Another material exploration that I will do is testing on how different fabrics will react when stretched and how it will stretched if a hole is punched for the fabric to be hooked onto the joints.

Regarding the fabrication process, we were thinking of using the Zund cutter for the fabrics which is available in the UNSW Red Center. After talking with the staff from the workshop, we might be able to get access to the machine next week depending on the situation since currently the machine’s compressor needs to be repaired.

What further experimentation to be done?

For the rest of today, my plan is to experiment on the different types of fabric and think of a way to prevent tearing during the fabrication process when it is stretched.
